So as the fall season comes to a close . . .

Both the men's and women's soccer teams advance to the NCAA playoffs before losing yesterday in the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight respectively to the two 2007 reigning champs.

That same day the women's cross country team finishes 23rd in the nation at the NCAA championships.

The prior weekend, the football team just misses a 1st place finish for the MIAC's 2008 season after losing in the last 16 seconds of their final game. They found themselves ranked in the top 25 nationally earlier in the fall before an OT loss at home.

Earlier this year, of course, our more traditional sports giants make national news. CUT, the only men's LAC squad to reach the field of 16, defeats Dartmouth, UC Santa Cruz, Pitt and Georgia before falling to Florida, the #1 ranked men's team in the nation, in semi-final play. SYZYGY, the only women's LAC squad to reach the field of 16, defeats Oregon, Northeastern and Michigan State before falling to UCLA, the #1 ranked women's team in the nation, in quarter-final play.

I remember the CheerLiters at the first—and possibly last—NCAA sanctioned metric football game in 1977. I think Carleton lost that game along with every other one that year. But the cross-country team was great....

Carleton didn't just lose - they were thrashed 42-0 by the Oles.
The game's unique "metric" led to national coverage. 8,000 people showed up in person to see the Knights lanced.

Sports Update:

In a final football note to this much more successful season, strong safety Drew Ziller was just named to the American Football Coaches Associations (AFCA) All-America Team, the D3Football.com All-America First Team and to the Associated Press (AP) Little All-America Third Team. He was one of only 8 players in all of D3 football to be named to all three teams and finished #1 nationally in D1, 2, or 3 in tackles per game. Kudos!
Winter has brought us what's shaping up to a just as successfull basketball season. The Knights are 6-1 now after squeezing out a victory 62-61 over Chicago last week.

Do the Cheerboys use any of the great cheers from the Cheerliters? The ones that spring to mind:
Give me a P-L-A-Y-T-E-X
What's that spell? Playtex
What's that mean? Hold that line

and
Give me a E-X-L-A-X
What's that spell? Ex Lax
What's that mean? Run, Run, Run!!!

Thankfully, no! Bingle, methinks thou art dating thyself.

In my limited exposure to the Cheerboys, they seem more into, well, exposure?

Their displays tend more to the visual (unusual for Carleton). Lots of bare chests painted gold and blue (the colder the barer, it seems), push-ups to match total Knights' points with each new touchdown/field goal/safety, track runs with new scores, etc. Half-time "shows" run the gamut from the ridiculous to the hilarious. Not a pom-pon to be found. Acrobatic attempts? - think serious injury.
