<p>My daughter is a Carleton sophomore and her life-long best friend is at Macalester, so I am basing my knowledge on their observations. Macalester: confined to two city blocks in attractive residential area of St. Paul; more of an international focus; more drugs, pierces and tatoos; not as strong in the sciences. Carleton: larger campus with huge attached arboretum in a small city with a main street that feels like time forgot it--in a good way; students of varying stripes but less need to come across as "hip"; most study abroad but less internationl focus when at Carleton; strong in sciences and the humanities; more "serious" academic types at Carleton than Macalester.
