Excited for y’all! Ds loved Carleton so I think your kids are making a great choice.
@caspiancat I think it’s so funny that Pomona is still out there. I thought it would be the perfect place for ds1. I absolutely saw him as a Sagehen, but he ended up not visiting or applying. When ds2 was applying to college we flew out to Claremont so he could see Pomona and Claremont McKenna. I took the tour alone while he was in class, and afterward I called ds1 at Carleton and asked, “Why didn’t you apply here again?” lol It felt like Carleton on steroids (though, in actuality, they are quite different, I think). Ds2 applied and got in to both Pomona and CMC but ended up someplace else entirely.
@“Youdon’tsay” Thanks for your cheerful and encouraging responses. So glad your ds loved Carleton! What did he end up studying there? My D is very interested in Cognitive Science and Linguistics.
Pomona grew on my D after visiting last summer and I would say she fell in love with it after ED II was over- lol! Carleton was a school I thought was a great fit for my D so I introduced it and asked if she would consider it. She is so impressed with the school now as am I. I do think they have a similar but unique feel to them. I honestly can see her thriving at either.
Started in environmental science but switched to poli sci.
I’m also the one who found Carleton … here on cc! Once ds started researching it, he agreed that it sounded perfect. He first visited with a friend the summer before senior year. I didn’t see the school until the last week of April when he was still trying to decide. I fell in love but was trying to play it cool in case he didn’t feel the same. When we met in the Burton dining hall at the end of his visit, he said “Let’s go to the bookstore!” and I knew it was a match.
Welcome! Another Carl parent here! My S is a freshman also interested in Cognitive Science! I also suggested Carleton to him initially. We visited Macalester and Carleton on the same trip. After our visit, he knew he would apply! He has great relationships with his professors, and finds his peers interesting, smart, funny and kind. The academic rigor is no joke but S seems to be managing and takes advantage of the many resources available…
Those on sports or academic teams do often travel off campus several weekends during the year. Son joined an academic team and has been to many college campuses & in the cities the past two weekends for competition. He has also been on weekend outdoor trips with the Canoe club. Just something to consider for those concerned about its small town location.
