Carlson School of Business. reputation outside of MN? Compare to others?

I had posted this in the Minnesota board but it does not seem very active. Doing some of the research, Carlson is very well rated and admissions seems to be competitive. Just wondering if it is well known outside of Minnesota when it comes to Job placement and other variables associated with the school. Carlson seems somewhat difficult to get in with about a 28% acceptance rate into the program. Around 7000 applicants and about 2000 acceptances. Only about 600 enroll.

It seems to be on par with Ohio State Fisher, but Carlson is not as large of a program which would make it quite attractive as far as class size and maybe even quality of education. However, OSU due to their highly rated sports teams seems to have edge when it comes to National exposure and name recognition around the country and maybe around the world.

Anybody familiar with these programs? How competitive is it to get accepted into these programs? Is one more difficult than the other? Looking to apply to UM, OSU, Miami U, and Pitt., and Mizzou as a financial safety just in case and already accepted to. My stats are on the lower to mid part of their respective 50% acceptance rates. I am out of state for all these schools.

Thank you so much for all opinions and well of knowledge.

I’d say it is about the same as OSU. It is still a big 10 school. I have an MBA from Carlson (from some years ago), but I was very impressed with the quality of teaching in particular.

One thing about Carlson is it tends to have a lot of in-state students who stay in MN with Minnesota employers after graduation. That is not necessarily a bad thing, as the Twin Cities has a surprisingly large number of Fortune 500 companies based there and a robust economy. I’d say it is a good a choice as any on your list.

Even with an MBA, your future job prospects have a lot more to do with your job skills and experiences than anything else.

@intparent Thank you for your insightful response The interesting thing about Carlson is that is highly ranked by many publications, yet you don’t hear much about it. When I graduated in the mid 80’s, you just did not hear anything about these “named” business schools. The only one was “Wharton” and that still holds true today. It seems like now all these schools go by “Kelley”, or “Ross” etc…I guess from a Marketing stand point it makes a lot of sense especially if the school is highly ranked or known.

The names are mostly for big donors. Ross is. I also have a BBA from Michigan, and honestly it bugs me to tell people my degree is from Ross – I graduated from The University if Michigan School of Business Administration, thank you very much. But Ross is the recognized name now.
