Doing some of the research, Carlson is very well rated and admissions seems to be competitive. Just wondering if it is well known outside of Minnesota when it comes to Job placement and other variables associated with the school.
It seems to be on par with Ohio State Fisher, but Carlson is not as large which would make it quite attractive as far as class size and maybe even quality of education. However, OSU due to their highly rated sports teams seems to have edge when it comes to National exposure and name recognition around the country and maybe around the world
Anybody familiar with these programs? How competitive is it to get accepted into these programs? Is one more difficult than the other? Looking to apply to UM, OSU, Miami U, and Pitt… My stats are on the lower to mid part of their respective 50% acceptance rates. I am out of state for all these schools.
Last year when my D17 was looking at Carlson they had just admitted their incoming class of 2020 and the accept rate was 28% (according to the AO giving the presentation). Most Carlson grads stay in the Midwest just due to the large number of Fortune 500’s in the region. It’s possible to go work on Wall St. or on the West Coast if that’s what you want, but you’ll probably have to work a bit harder to land those jobs. Carlson had a great placement rate as of last year (haven’t looked at this year’s stats). My impression of Carlson is that with an entering class of only 500 you are getting a much more personalized experience than with most other colleges at UMN.
You might consider applying as the application is very easy to complete and, at least as of last year, they waived the app. fee for OOS. Once accepted to your schools, be sure to visit and ask questions about placement and so forth.
Good luck to you!
Thank you for your reply JBS. I was notified of my acceptance to the Carlson over the weekend. THRILLED ! Hopefully, I can get a scholarship as this is the only way, I could attend UMTC. I applied to a total of 8 schools and the application fee was waived to three of the schools. I do not have a clear number 1 school due to the fact that the process needs to play out over the course of the next few months and FINANCIALS will dictate my options. I would hate to get too excited only to find out how deflating it can be. By the end of the day, I am hoping to have a few good choices including UMTC which is at the top of my list.
Awesome @1917souci good luck to you this year. If you end up with many fine choices that’s a good problem to have! Try to visit if you can as you don’t want to find that the school giving you the best financial aid is the worst fit. And don’t forget that a selective business program will add to your marketability when you look for a job so if you have to borrow a bit that should be OK.
Absolutely agree with the quality of the program will part of the end result as well. Are you from Minnesota? How is your daughter liking the school so far? How difficult or competitive? We other schools did you apply to and did you come to her final decision to attend Carlson? The only schools we have not visit out of the 8 schools are UMTC, Pitt, and FSU. However, if it comes down to any of these schools, we will visit for sure.
We are in-state but my daughter didn’t attend UMN as it turned out because she was shooting for some pretty elite schools and got into one of them ED. She had been accepted to Carlson and to UW-Madison (MN has reciprocity) before finding out about her #1 so withdrew applications from all her remaining schools at that time.
You can get online to see the suggested plan of study for your intended major. First year you will take a liberal Ed or two, Econ 1101 and (I think) 1102, and a business ethics course. The 2nd year you will be doing an intensive business core. You will be doing a study abroad at some point as well. It’s a really great program and we’ve heard that the students are pretty happy there. And of course UMN is located right in the heart of the Twin Cities Metro so lots of places to eat and go for entertainment.
JBS. That is excellent. You must be very proud of her. I hope she happy and thriving at her school. We spend so much time researching and studying all these options and you always hope the end result is always what we have hoped. The process has some many variables for so many people. It is insane. This was not the case growing up. Then again, none of these schools were as competitive and as expensive…
