Hey guys!
My friend just recommended Carlton to me and I don’t have any idea what it’s about.
Anyone have info? Doesn’t have to be anything specific, I’m just curious.
Top school requiring top grades and test scores. Great for linguistics. My sons friend went there over Brown - he was accepted to both and a visit to Carlton helped him decide.
Which Carleton? The excellent small liberal arts college in Minnesota? Or the large but not particularly notable comprehensive university in Ottowa, Canada?
@ThankYouforHelp Minnesota
Great school. Top 10 liberal arts. Especially strong in sciences, notably geology. Known for emphasizing teaching ability in choosing faculty. Produces a ton of graduates who go on to get PhDs. Brutal winters.
Great school! Underground tunnels!
Be sure you spell it right if you apply. CarlEton. Smart students, but a pretty laid back vibe. Ultimate frisbee is big. Strong academics, excellent grad school placement. About 45 minutes from the Twin Cities and Mall of America. No merit aid available except for a couple thousand per year for NMF. Arboretum next to campus. Has three terms per year, students take 3 classes per term on a shorter, intense schedule. I think winter break used to start at Thanksgiving, don’t know if that is still true. Broomball played for fun in the winter.
Here’s a video:
Wow, sounds awesome!
Thanks so much for everyone’s help! I’m definitely adding Carleton to my list:)
marvin100 – sorry, but the tunnels are now closed due to maintenance & security issues. Yes, the students now have to walk outdoors in the winter.
If you are applying to Carleton, add Grinnell to your list - lots of cross-applicants and the schools have a great deal in common. What Grinnell has that Carleton doesn’t is generous merit aid. And an open curriculum similar to Brown’s. The school is in a small town (similar to Northfield) about an hour from Des Moines and Iowa City.
Iowa is Iowa though - something to keep in mind
And yes, winter break starts at Thanksgiving time and lasts six weeks
Grinnell is a great school but equating Grinnell to Northfield is a bit of a stretch IMO - Northfield struck me as a much more dynamic, vibrant town. Grinnell, by comparison, seemed very sedate. On the plus side, Iowa City - a very cool college town - is 45 minutes away - about the same distance from Grinnell as the Twin Cities are from Carleton. Des Moines is close to Grinnell, too, but I got the idea Grinnellians travel there mainly to go to the airport.
^^^ I’m glad someone said what I was thinking. I have never been to Grinnell, but ds1’s good friend went there while ds1 went to Carleton. I’ve been to Northfield several times and think it’s positively charming and lively for a small town. I’ve seen my friends’ pictures of their times in Grinnell and, gosh, every time they went they ate at the same place and shopped at the same place with a tractor and gave me the impression there weren’t lots of other options. And Iowa City, at 70,000 is no Twin Cities at 3 million. He did love his time at Grinnell though!
Grinnell isn’t going to be as cheap as the OP needs it to be, so it is a moot point.
No financial info from OP here, intparent. What makes you think it’s not an affordable option?
Nope, wouldn’t describe the town of Grinnell as vibrant…but then Northfields wouldn’t cut it for me either. At both schools, all the action is on campus. You’d rarely leave either campus - and when you do, it’s to go into the nearest city or to check out the nature. At Grinnell, the prairie nature reserve is gorgeous and the Grant Wood scenic byway is spectacular, esp. in the fall.
Hmm… now I have no idea. Probably I mixed this up with another poster, sorry! Carry on, Carleton is a great school. (But if voting here, I prefer Carleton if the cost were the same).
