<p>Wanted to keep this thread up. I'd love to know who will be at CMU next year!</p>
<p>Just looking for others who are considering CMU for Vocal Performance. It's so awesome that we can cross-study with Musical Theater too. Does anyone know anything about recent graduates and their opera careers from the past 5 years? Still making the decision...</p>

<p>As a CMU parent all I can say is that it has been an amazing place for my son. He is so happy there! I don't know anything about the Vocal Performance major because it is under the school of music and my son is in the Drama dept.</p>

<p>THE CASTING POOL
Chosky Theater -- Productions for the mainstage are primarily cast from eligible senior students from the casting pool.</p>
<p>Rauh Studio Theater -- Productions for the Studio are primarily cast from eligible junior students and available seniors from the casting pool.</p>
<p>A student's eligibility for the casting pool, directing and stage managing responsibilities will be determined by the Drama faculty based on:
�� the student's standing in their course work.
�� the student's ability to meet the challenge of the production based on his/her development .
�� the student's successful completion of University core requirements (English, History, CSW) by the beginning of the Junior year.</p>
<p>Note that it says "mainly" cast from Junior and Senior actors. There is a possibility that freshman and sophomores could get cast. In addition, there are grad and undergrad student directed shows. Each grad students direct 6 shows during their 3 years and each undergrad directs 2. So the opportunity to perform in student directed shows is also a possibility.</p>
<p>I'd also like to note that Juilliard uses the same system too - first and second year students only perform in classroom "rehearsal projects" and do not perform in shows open to the public until the third year.</p>
<p>Based on our visit to CMU and in talking with current students, the above information is what we heard as well, with regard to performing.</p>

briarbrad is correct. Freshmen & sophomores cannot be in the mainstage show but as a freshman, my son did get a role in a graduate-student directed show, performed in a student Cabaret, and performed twice in the Playground (week-long) event. I think there were also some other small performance opportunities he got as well. So there are some performance opportunities but no mainstage your first 2 years. </p>
<p>The MT program at CMU is very challenging, so much so that it is considered a double-major by the university. The first two years really don't have a lot of room for adding in things like being in the mainstage show. I will say that my son could not be happier with choosing CMU. He was home with weekend to audition for a community theatre summer show in our town and he was still just beaming about his CMU experience. So, if you are interested, I highly recommend you audition next year for CMU. And I wish you the absolute best of luck with all of your auditions next year!

<p>A question for those of you who know CMU. My daughter is a junior who wants to double major in Chemistry and either Musical Theater or Music (Vocal Performance). Univ of Michigan said not a chance. The Ivy League colleges have said yes. Is it possible at CMU?</p>
<p>No for MT because at CMU, MT is already a double major. I do know someone who majored in Music Performance (intstrument ) and business, and I know some who majored in various music programs there and minored in another school program, but you will have to call the school to ask specifically about Voice and other majors, or look it up on the on-line catalogue. If you look at the MT majors schedule, you will see why another major cannot be squeezed in. There is no time left for other courses.</p>
<p>Everything said above is true. I just want to point out that a BFA in musical theater CAN be done as a double major at NYU with a liberal arts subject. Deans JUST told this yesterday at an accepted student event at Tisch. Thought I would mention it because it is not possible with many other BFA in MT programs. </p>
<p>Combining a liberal arts major with a BM in Vocal Performance may be a different case at colleges, however. That may be more possible than the situation with BFA's in musical theater.</p>

<p>You are going to love CMU so much. The MT kids are so close, supportive, funny, inspiring, and everything you could want in classmates. The teachers are fabulous too. It's a very challenging curriculum and program, but so worth it. (Speaking of which, echosensei, there is no room in the CMU MT program for another major. It would be adding a 3rd major and there aren't enough hours in a day!)</p>
<p>So Ryah, please feel free to email me or when you're up there this weekend, look for a curly-haired blond, blue-eyed, short guy with a big smile on his face - that will be my son.
