Carnegie Mellon Class of 2021 Applicants Discussion Thread

I got it as well.

Computational Biology, sounds fun

does CMU care about demonstrated interest? I love the school but unsure if I should visit

my essay was 560 words is that bad…its all i could fit in a page?

@allima – 650 words is a lot - pretty good for 1 page. According to their Common Data Set - demonstrated interest is important:
https://www.cmu.edu/ira/CDS/pdf/cds_2016-17/c-first-time-first-year-admission.pdf

i said 560… lol
and thanks for the info on demonstrated interest, i’ll likely visit sometime soon then!

Hey guys, is anyone else encountering this problem on the Where Am I In the Process?" portal?

After logging in, it displays an “Admission and Financial Aid Notification”. After clicking the Financial Aid Notification and attesting the statements, it says “Your financial aid processing is not yet complete. Check back on ‘Where Am I In the Process’ to be sure you’ve submitted all your required documents.”
After I click the button to take me back (“Return to Where Am I In the Process”), I receive an Error Message (“Error getting data”).

Because of this, my “Attestations” are still not received, and the notification stays there.

I have been getting that error since day 1 the Admn & financial Aid notification’ button showed up. Have sent numerous messages and have recd. responses stating that it is fixed. But, to no avail

@samc24 Mine was like that for a couple months, but was fixed 2-3 weeks ago. I think that just means that they are still processing all of your finaid stuff.

^^Same here. When I first reported the error, I was told that they were still processing FA documents. When I checked back after Winter Break I noticed that it got fixed and that my attestations were received.

On my son’s page, to the right of his name, is “Admission and Financial Aid Notification” in a red font. However, this is not a live link or button to click. Is this the issue you guys are talking about? Down at the bottom of the page where it says “Financial Aid Documents Needed” there is nothing listed. So does that mean they have everything they need? They should.

There should be a button below the red font. When clicked, it currently says something like “your financial aid processing is not yet complete” (for my D).

They should also list the Fin. Aid documents as received if you’ve sent them all (including all the IDOC stuff). If they haven’t it probably means they are still processing them all. You might give them a call to make sure that’s the case but most likely they will say just take a look after everything is posted. We sent all my daughter’s stuff over two months ago and it wasn’t marked as received till well into Jan.

@DrCounsel Isnt there a button below the text in Red that says - Financial Aid Notification? When we click on this button, it takes us to a new page which says -

Financial Aid Notification

Your financial aid processing is not yet complete.
Check back on ‘Where Am I In the Process’ to be sure you’ve submitted all your required documents.

and there is button to click - Return to Where am i in the process. When you click that we are getting an error.

No, my S’s page does not have any button below the text. I guess I will have to give them a call to see where he stands.

Has anyone had an interview yet? Do you think it’s worth registering for? I know it’s not mandatory and we aren’t assigned interviewers, but since CMU values interest I was thinking this would be a good option.

Suggestions?

^Same. There are a lot of interviewers nearby where I live, but not many who were a) in CIT or SCS, the two schools I’m applying to; b) attended for undergrad because I’m sure the grad experience is very different; c) reasonably close by (like, do I want to travel an hour away for yet another interview); and d) available. I’m thinking of emailing a few more before emailing the office of admissions with something like, “I tried to get an interview but was unable to schedule one–however, that doesn’t mean I’m any less interested in Carnegie Mellon.”

they like it if you visit right??

I had an interview a couple weeks ago. There weren’t any interviewers in my state, so I emailed the admissions office and they sent me the info for a guy in another state who did a phone interview with me. He was actually CIT, not MCS like I applied but we had a really good discussion.

If possible, the interview is certainly more of a positive than a negative, so do it if you can but it’s not that big a deal if you can’t swing it.

A visit is a great way to show interest, but they definitely understand not everyone can do that for financial reasons.

(err, if I attended an information session last spring, do you think I can get away with not doing an interview? I have so much stuff on my plate right now, and none of the interviewers seem particularly appealing to me.)

Yeah man, it’s up to you and if you’re too busy and don’t really want to that’s your choice. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, especially since it sounds like you already have a lot you’re thinking about!
