Carnegie Mellon Class of 2021 Applicants Discussion Thread

@spadeillusion Thank you very much. It helps a lot. So if I apply for ED, I can choose only one department?

@golftlist That’s right! As an ED applicant you can only apply to one department, while as a RD applicant you may apply to up to 3. This may be a relevant concern in deciding whether or not to apply ED, in addition to the binding agreement. Make sure you are set on studying that particular field, because it’s a bit tricky to transfer majors at CMU (or at least so I’ve heard).

Just wondering do you guys know if CMU still offers ED 2?

@AeroFeliCitY ED II isn’t offered by Carnegie.

I’ll be applying RD to CMU.

Did anyone start working on the supplemental essays?

I’ll be applying to CMU’s School of Drama! It’s a long shot as they accept less than 1% of their applicants (I talked to an Acting major when I visited in April), but it’s up there on my top 3 list. Good luck to everyone applying!!

Hey guys! I’m applying ED to Carnegie Mellon’s SCS, which is definitely number 1 on my list. It seems to be a bit of a long shot, but given I’m the techie nerd and I’ve got good test scores, I think I have a decent shot. Good luck to all!

Bumping this up to front page.

Feel free to discuss your excitement for ED deadlines.

I’m applying ED to the College of Engineering for EE + CS integrated.
I would apply to the school of comp sci instead but I feel that I have a better chance at the school of engineering, especially due to how competitive SCS is.

@spadeillusion I’m a US citizen living abroad. How did the financial aid thing work for you? I can’t file FAFSA because we haven’t been in the US enough to file taxes but I’m doing the CSS. Did you qualify for merit scholarships too?

Hello guys,
I am an ED applicant to Carnegie Mellon this year and I have sent all the materials on or prior to Nov. 1. However, I still can’t see any of my test scores posted on “Where am I.” Should I be worried or should I just wait and be patient? Thanks.

Considering applying RD for Tepper business. The only thing holding me back is the fact that CMU does not meed need and many schools in its selectivity range and even lower do.

@class0f2017 Either you’re getting close to a full ride or next to nothing. Thats why the average is 1/2 tuition-ish- the midpoint of two extremes. My mom made <$20k last year in a single parent household, and I got $64k/$68k in undergraduate grants. If they want you, they will do what it takes to bring you over here. Best of luck!

@shumpu123 We don’t have EE + CS integrated, you probably mean Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). That one is up and away the most popular major in the College of Engineering, making it the hardest to get into. Acceptance rate was ~13% last year for COE overall, but for ECE its a bit lower, so do whichever you think you’d be happier doing

ECE rarely accepts transfers because the department fills up so quickly, and they also don’t let people double very easily, either. CS is even harder to transfer into, but if you take their main courses, you’re guaranteed to get a double major or a minor. I’m probably late but hope this helps!

-A current Astrophysics student wondering what would have happened if he instead chose ECE. (I got into both)

What @Homsar said is backed by Carnegie Mellon officially. They will award you a higher financial aid package if they preference you for some reason (whether it be for academics, artistic merit, your demographics, etc.).

As stated on the admissions website:

"Carnegie Mellon values diversity and we seek to build a community of people of varied gender, race, academic interest, talent and background to accurately reflect the global community and to provide an enlightening experience for our student body.

Also, we seek to enroll students of the highest academic and artistic caliber in each of our six undergraduate colleges. We use our financial aid resources to enroll a class that reflects this goal.

Carnegie Mellon’s financial assistance program is designed to meet our dual goal of helping prospective students who have demonstrated financial need afford the cost of education and rewarding those students who have outstanding talents and abilities. Need-based financial assistance is used to enroll high-quality students. Highest quality students will receive the most favorable financial assistance packages."

@avonweasley sorry for the late reply. I was actually able to file FAFSA. For FAFSA, I converted the currencies and filled in the tax forms as best as I could. Basically, for both the CSS and FAFSA, there were a lot of currency conversions. I was able to qualify for merit scholarships for most of the schools I applied to. Financial aid is a pretty broad topic, is there anything specific, you want to know?

I wonder if anyone knows when RD will be released - website says by April 15 - that seems late and then need to enroll by May 1. Wonder if in the past they announced admission decisions earlier than mid-April. thanks!

@CA1543 Decisions have come out traditionally on the last week of March.

@MandomeLife – thanks so much! That would be helpful – my son has off the second week of April so we plan to go visit the schools he gets into RD then; plan to visit EA schools he gets in and is interested in over the Feb break.

March 26 last year.
