Hey guys
I am a rising senior living in Silicon Valley and it has always been my dream to study Statistics at CMU or UC Berkeley. This year I will be applying to CMU’s Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences early decision. Now I noticed that the average admitted GPAs for each college are posted on their website.
As of second semester Junior year my cumulative Unweighted GPA is 3.88. The honors and AP courses I have taken include Honors Molecular Bio, Honors Chemistry, Honors English I/II, Honors Physics, Honors Multivariable Calculus, AP French Lang, AP English Lit, AP Chemistry, AP Java, AP Microeconomics, AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC. Next year I will be studying AP Environmental Science or Physics C, AP Stat (of course), AP Government, French Lit and Honors Linear Alg(possibly) but I’ll figure that out soon lol.
I saw that the average accepted GPA to DC was 3.8 however I understand that CMU does not take Freshman Year into Consideration and Freshman year is buffering my GPA a lot.
None of my B’s / B+'s were in my freshman year ( B+ second sem Honors English II Soph year , B+'S Both Sem junior year AP English Lit, B first sem junior year Honors Molecular Bio , B second sem junior year honors physics)
How will this affect my chances ED at CMU? Also do the GPAs on the website include freshman year ? Thanks so much guys I really Appreciate this !
Lollll sorry I meant AP Computer Science A @idkName.
As for test scores
SAT II’s: SAT Chem 780, SAT MathII: 790
SAT: 1470( which is really low… I took thay as a trial run sophomore year with 0 prep in 2016… I retook 2 weeks ago and I was getting around 1540 on the official practice tests)
Recalculate your GPA on just Sophomore and Junior year and that is you CMU GPA. Keep in mind that it is easier to get into Dietrich than other colleges. If you expect to get stellar grades senior year, you can apply regular decision and perhaps they will look at Senior grades.
My son just got into Dietrich with 3.7 (soph + Junior GPA) and straight A’s senior year. He had some good EC’s, but sounds like you do as well. Good luck. I am sure my son would love to have a fellow musician in Dietrich.
I think your chances are good, if you write a great essay and have solid letters of recc. My son was admitted to MCS a year ago with 3.72 UW (closer to 3.8 if exclude freshman year, and 4.0 junior year.) He had so-so ECs and APs, but 35 ACT and a good art supplement. He is having a great experience at CMU.
Lmao i can’t believe this but I have almost the same stats as you and I’m really really interested in CMU’s Stats and Machine Learning program! Best of luck to the both of us, I’m planning on EDing as well.
