Hey guys, ive been having a hard time going back and forth in determining which college I should go to. Im choosing between Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, UCLA, and university of Michigan Honor program. My intended major is applied math. Which one may be the best amongst those four?

CMU!!! It is good.

All of these are good choices! I would go to the place that is offering me the most money. Just make sure you like the surrounding area.

I would lean towards Michigan Honors but strongly consider CMU and Northwestern as well. Michigan has a top 5 Math Department and its a pretty small department I believe so undergraduates will get a lot of attention from professors unlike other majors at the school like Economics and Political Science.

I don’t think Terrence Tao, a certifiable genius, would teach in the applied side of things, but if you take more of the theory-based stuff, he’d probably definitely be there for you. Overall, I would have to think UCLA’s math dept would be at least very good.

Michigan Honor Program would be my first choice, although I do have a soft spot for NU. But Michigan would def be my first choice here…

Did you get into NU’s arts & sciences? You may consider Engineering Sciences & Applied Math in the engineering school instead (you can transfer easily before school starts). Because it’s housed in the engineering school, it has different focus than if it were in a math department. There’s probably stronger emphasis on application on actual engineering systems or real world problems.
