Carnegie Mellon or Johns Hopkins?

Hey everyone :)

So what do you think? What are the pros and cons for each?

I applied for chemistry for both, but if I go to JHU i might do pre-med!

thanks

One of my good friends from high school went to Hopkins for undergrad as a ChemE. He said the worst things about the school was how everyone was a pre-med.

LOL and will try to sabotage your work too…

No problem with being Pre-med at CMU ( pre-med just means taking 2 Chem, 2 Org Chem, 2 Phy and 2 Bio classes, all that’s required for Medical school admission.

You could also get involved in BioMedEng, research or such and set yourself apart from the ordinary applicant…
good luck

I chose CMU over Johns Hopkins mostly because I felt CMU was slightly strong in my major (Mechanical Engineering). I definitely got a feeling that Johns Hopkins seemed very focused on bio/there were a lot of premed students, which isn’t my thing, but if you are interested in that, you would have lots of company! Also, I decided I would rather be in Pittsburgh than Baltimore - I loved the JHU campus, and I realize that not all of Baltimore is terrible, but was not thrilled with the surrounding area at all. At CMU, you have lots of fun, student-friendly places in walking distance of campus and no real worries about safety.

These were the last 2 standing a few years ago for my son. Can you visit? He did an April sleeping bag weekend at CMU. A few days later, same week, same thing @ JHU…accepted students reception that also included an overnight. Attending both in quick succession like this, back to back, was valuable because everything was fresh in his mind. We’re in NJ so we were able to accomplish this.

Given both are strong academic schools, these overnights sealed the deal in favor of CMU. It wasn’t even close for him…preferred just about everything about Carnegie vs JHU. Others may prefer Hopkins.
