Hi, I'm a senior attending an international high school. I am applying RD to Carnegie Mellon School of Art. I was wandering how much they look at the portfolio. Since the major is art, I am pretty sure that they would look at the portfolio more than the academic part. But, my question is, by how much?

The only people who would be able to tell you this are the dept.'s staff in the area you are applying in. My sense (based on S’s application) was that it was heavily considered but within the context of the whole application. CMU is composed of smart kids in all majors. So I still think GPA, SAT’s, rank (if reported), AP classes still matter. CMU has the College of Fine Arts which is composed of art, design (graphic/industrial), music, drama (tech/mt/drama) and architecture. I think the portfolio review in person is extremely important however. It is the opportunity for you to present and talk about your art. Good luck. Pay close attention to all deadlines.

Thank you!!

current school of art student here, they generally weight towards your portfolio. i think they have a standard for SAT/gpa but they’ll be more lenient if they really enjoy your portfolio.
