So on the common app for Carnegie Mellon University, it asks to put in your AMC 10 and AMC 12 scores, if you have done those math competitions. And I know tha CMU computer science really stresses that their applicants be very good at math. Problem is my I have never done any of these really hard math competitions, and I feel like I am at a disadvantage to those who have and have scored well. I currently take Differential Equations and Calc C along with being on the math team.
Do you think I have lower chances because I have not taken these tests?
Oh, I thought from the title, you are talking about the difficulty of the SCS curriculum, not admissions. Anyways. Most people I know in SCS have not taken AMC, so you are good. But you are correct in that CMU places strong emphasis on math.
I think you will find variety among the students applying to SCS - some will have AMC/AIME/US(J)AMO experience and others won’t. Solid math classes are certainly important, and if you’re taking Multi and DiffEq then you should be fine. SCS has a very low acceptance rate, so it is hard for everyone to get in.
