<pre><code>During my search to find the ideal college that would allow me to thrive academically and socially, I found that Carnegie Mellon stood out among my other college choices. Along with providing an excellent education, Carnegie Mellon would allow me to make the most of my time outside of the classroom with its extensive extracurricular programs and lively urban environment. I particularly want to enter the electrical and computer engineering program at the College of Engineering for the opportunity to conduct research that can solve many of society's challenges.
My love of computers started when I was around six and my family bought our first desktop computer. I spent many hours learning what I could during the internet's youth. As the years passed, I made sure to keep up with the latest technological advances. Part of the reason I love technology is because of its constant, rapid change. Every year, devices are becoming faster and more powerful. It is a fast-paced industry, which I believe is the perfect field for me because I have always been a quick learner. My ability to quickly pick up on new concepts ultimately led me to excel in math. Math has consistently been both my strongest and favorite subject. Having a strong knowledge of math is essential in the computer and electrical engineering fields, as they rely heavily on the topic. My ultimate goal is to have a career that combines my two favorite topics, which is why I want to enter the electrical and computer engineering program.
I always knew I wanted to work with computers and tech, but it was not until recent years that I learned that I truly wanted to be an engineer. As I entered high school, I started to dig deeper into the parts that make up the various electronics around my house. At first, I was taking apart my Playstation 3 in order to fix motherboard problems. Then, I moved on to stripping apart my laptop to fix various issues. I began watching Youtube videos to learn different coding languages such as BASIC and Python. I still remember the joy I felt when I finished programming my first “Hello World” program in Visual BASIC. My desire to become an engineer was solidified this year because of my Engineering Physics class. I had a blast tweaking the circuitry of my motorized gear car and programming the instructions for the mini tank I had finished building. These types of experiences are something I hope to continue to a greater level in the future.
Obviously I would like to attend Carnegie Mellon because it is one of the top engineering schools in the world. However, my desire to attend CMU extends further than the college's prestigious name. Carnegie Mellon presents the perfect balance of advanced education and extracurricular activities. The college promotes the creation of “well-rounded students”, a concept that I believe is extremely important. It is not enough to just be an intelligent person; you must have an active life outside of academics to truly thrive as a person. With its sports, clubs, and local events, Carnegie Mellon presents the perfect environment to forge scholars who go beyond there academic studies.
