Carnegie Mellon University Class of 2023 Regular Decision

ACCEPTED - MCS (math)
SAT 1320 GPA 3.7/4.0
EC Math/Robotics (pres for both)

Priority waitlist to Dietrich College (is it really so bad I don’t see anyone applying to DC here???)
SAT 1500
Math II 800, Chem 800

I honestly don’t get the priority waitlist thing…Is it like the “early decision” for waitlist, and one has to enroll if admitted? Can anyone explain please?

S also formally accepted into CFA today. Vocal Performance, tenor. Waiting on financials to see if it’s feasible.

Asian Female
Waitlisted SCS
Rejected to College of Engineering
SAT - 1530 ( 780 M )
SAT II - Math - 800 , Physics - 760 , Bio M- 760 Chem - 730
VP - Kpop Club, Robotics Team
2 STEM summer programs

Also I have the same question with the priority waitlist thing as @Dreamer2023 does- Does priority waitlist mean that you must go?

@catpls I’ll email the admissions to ask. They also didn’t indicate my second choice major in the portal. Does anyone have the same issue or are they not considering second choice?

Accepted, International

Among the waiting lists, did everyone get priority waiting lists or just waiting lists? I’m confused.

Priority waitlisted for Biological Sciences  Congrats to everyone who got in!

@paranoidmom101 I know right I think I’m just having false hope because of the priority waiting list

Accepted.sat 1590.Gpa 3.95. BCSA

@koreanamericano thanks! I guess I’ll just have to buy one for decision day if i end up going to cmu

@Viviany86 congratulations! My son also applied to BCSA but was only accepted by the music school. He has a similar stats-36 ACT, 1590 SAT and he is a violist. May I know what your art major is? And I assume you are a girl.

@ilikewiki – surprised you did not get in!! see few others who got in with lower scores…hope they are not comparing GPA across schools…hope CMU is smarter than that! See high SAT scores, ACT scores, AP scores and SAT subject tests but due to the nature of the school somebody might have gotten 3.9 UWGPA …hope it is not the case! There are so many people posting with UW GPA 4.0 across many blog posts…am not sure, how many colleges are not swayed by the raw numbers instead of comparing the GPA against their own classmates!! When somebody gets a UW GPA 4.0 with a ACT of 31 or 32 (definitely ACT is much easier than SAT for most students based on the scores posted in CC)…there should be warning bells…there is so much of grade inflation, I am really concerned for kids where there are very few get above 3.9 UWGPA!!
Anyway, all the best, hope, you have other wonderful colleges already in hand!

Well how can the SAT be a great indicator with the cheating? A while back they administered an SAT in China and it was compromised and ended up in the hand of US SAT takers. So go figure why that SAT had the biggest curve ever and lowered the scores of student not setting the curve. SAT and College Board is a racket. I even saw students on phones during breaks then going back to change answers. As someone with 19 AP classes and mostly 4s and 5s as well as college classes I don’t feel the SAT is the best indicator at all. YMMV

@kg2013, thanks for the comments, I think the AO does know how to compare GPA: they basically don’t, or only compare with the kids from the same school. My son is Asian boy, which is a big negative factor in CS major. He will commit to an elite public school which is in state, we are glad that we will save about $200k in the next 4 years.

@ilikewiki I was stunned by your son’s stats too. My son is also Asian and applied to BCSA but only got accepted by the Arts part. He was a little upset this morning but after I showed him your post, he felt better and realized that he was not alone. My son has a Direct Admit to CS at UW as an out-of-state and he also has acceptances from USC, UT Austin and UMichigan.

@ilikewiki All his acceptances except UW are from the music part. I must say, music saves his life.

my comment was general regarding schools --meaning common tests where you can compare students across schools, districts and states …of course, if a country /region/district lets its students cheat that is a different issue --please do not confuse cheating vs. having a common criterion!
@ilikewiki --sadly UT Austin does that … Our son goes to Top 10 public school/magnet/charter school for last many years int he US News ranking!! Yes, there are people in his class who got into MIT, Michigan, U of Chicago, Wash U, Stanford, etc… that did not get in to UT Austin! The valedictorian in his class had a GPA of 3.92 UW! BTW, CS at UT Austin Honors is very highly rated – two kids from my son’s class got in!
Your son has some good very good options - UT Austin/U of Michigan! Just curious - do you think your son did not get it because he probably does not have ECs related to Comp science? His classmates who applied and got in to CS in Stanford & CS honors in UT participate in coding competitions across state/country!

meant to say --my son’s classmates who got CS in Stanford, UT Honors participated in coding competitions etc…

sorry, I confused the two postings one from ilikewiki & pdxtigermom…congrats to both your kids! Congrats to both your kids and am sending all good thoughts and wishes to both your kids!!
