Carnegie Mellon University(CMU)

Hey,

It is my dream to study in CMU in the field of computer science.

I am from India and don't need financial aid(won't say no if i get it).

How many SAT subject tests and AP exams should i take?

In India, there is no concept of GPA, just the annual percentile. I get in the 80-85% range.

I was planning to take just the following tests:
SAT-I ... hope to get 2200+
SAT SUBJECT- MATHS(LEVEL 2) , PHYSICS... hope to get 800 in each
AP- COMPUTER SCIENCE A... hope to get 5/5

I also have a few certificates:
A few summer camp certificates
A few table tennis and swimming competetions certificates
Am currently working to get an summer internship into a commercial software company

So, What are my chances to get into CMU?

I don’t like the speculation so I am going to just outline what would make you a competitive applicant at CMU, and thus any other american university:

-2200 SAT/33 ACT or higher
-2 700+ SAT ii subject tests
-Top 10% in high school class (top 5% highly preferable)
-2 Leadership positions in activities/sports (more than just a generic, r

Thanks for the reply wallrus75(like the name a lot)…i have a few questions:-

-I think i am in the top 8% of the school(though we don’t get like actual ranks, we find out our ranks by asking each other how much they scored)
-What do you mean by work experience?
-I don’t have leadership position certificates, but i have certificates in sports. (But i did organise a fete which was a success in our city)
-I play the piano and have played in a lot of occasions for the school
-I don’t have any national awards, though
-I plan to apply for early action I, will that help?

I’m not sure about early action. Usually, it doesn’t, but it doesn’t hurt either.

Top 8% is fine.

Work experience is getting paid or volunteering, whether tutoring, refereeing, working at a store, etc.

-I don’t know what you mean by “leadership certificates.” The main point I was trying to get across is make sure you look like a leader in your application.

-No national awards is perfectly fine  The people who do have awards usually have them in some minor activity or music, which they plan not to study at the University. It just helps them bring out passion. So just make sure you get the same idea across.

thanks a lot :D
