Right now Carnegie Mellon is my ideal college, but I'm worried that my low GPA (3.1) and SAT (1360) will severly hurt my chances. I have a few ECs and have held a job at an art gallery for 3 years now. However my dad is an Alum who did exceedingly well there, and I was wondering how much that would improve my chances, and what else i could do to get in.

1360 out of 2400?

It's definitely a reach for you but at CMU it all depends on which school you are applying to.

By your dad doing extremely well there, do you mean he had good grades? I doubt if that matters at all (unless of course his good grades led to a lucrative career which then led to him donate a bundle to cmu!).

no i got a 2100(out of 2400) on the new SAT but i was told that score is equivalent to around 1360 out of 1600. Concerning my father, yes it has led him to a very good career but I doubt that he is intrested in donating to the college.

2100/2400 is NOT equivalent to a 1360/1600 it is equivalent to a 1400, second it depends what you are majoring in; engineering might be difficult because the gpa is at least 3.67 but it also depends how well you did on your writing and math section of your sat.
