Carnegie Mellon University vs. Cooper Union

I am facing a dilemma.

I have been accepted into CMU, and wait-listed into Cooper Union. At CMU, I should be able to complete a double degree, one in ME and the other in Tepper. I know that will be close to impossible at Cooper, because they only offer majors in engineering, art, and architecture, and even in those, only one person in the history of CU has actually left with a double major. But, (assuming I get into Cooper) CU's academics are among the best, not to mention that tuition is free (I'm not getting anything from CMU). I know that Cooper still costs money because of books and room & board. I've also heard that Cooper's facilities are outdated, and having seen CMU, the campus appears very beautiful. I also don't want to have to study 24/7.

I'm going to CMU for sure unless i am taken off the wait-list for cooper, and supposing I am, which one should I choose? Carnegie Mellon or Cooper Union?

Do you have any other options between free and $180K?

Cooper Union is an excellent school... I highly recommend them.

Same thing for me cept between UVA and Carnegie...when I figure this out I will try to tell you!

lfk725 - I have nothing else that would get me an Engineering degree of significant value

I would recommend CMU over Cooper anyway, but that's just me.

go to cooper....

Cooper is free and its not bad. You're not going to be 180k in the hole.

Cooper free? Last time I checked, it costs over $20,000/year just to live in NYC. I'd say that Cooper would cost $100,000 over 4 years compared to CMU's $180,000. So yes, Cooper is cheaper, but it is not free.

NYC is anything but cheap. I have spent close to the amount the previous post mentioned just on housing/books/food/etc.. Normally, I would agree with Alexandre and say do NOT go to Cooper over CMU because this school is really depressing (not that CMU is wonderland).

However, there are SOME that might like it here. The very independent people who don't depend on others love it here. For example, I know a girl who's a bartender/part-time high school teacher and she loves it here. But she's over 26 and already has a degree from Columbia in biochem. so Cooper is like a continuing education for her. I know another guy who plays 3 diff. sports and works in 3 diff. places and is able to pull a 4.0. He's older than the typical student (23) and turned down MIT. There are exceptional students here who're really something else. These people have excellent multi-tasking abilities and are amazingly independent (they don't depend on anyone for friends/social life/study buddies/etc...). Just yesterday I met anyother girl who is only 18 and she works as a bartender/real-estate assistant/dancer and she's a civil engineer.

If you're like one of these machines, Cooper is THE place for you.

***civil engineering major (just so no one gets hung up on technicalities).
