“He’s a technical kid but also loves languages and other humanities and loves the idea of a Lac where students are there to learn for the sake of learning and is not too preprofessional.” This sounds Pomona. And don’t worry about research opportunities. They are there for asking.
These are exactly the factors we had to consider. A Humanities student at CMU does seem to have second-class citizenship status at least socially and possibly when it comes to the academic opportunities he craves. Thank you!
We are so thrilled with his choice! Thank you!
I think you made the right choice, though I may be biased because I was very impressed with Pomona when we visited, and my kid loved it (chose differently, but still has a warm place in her heart for Pomona)
Congratulations! great decision. Some of my students are at Pomona, loving it. Don’t forget the strong tech resource from Harvey Mudd!
Yes! We love the Harvey Mudd component! I just hope he gets enough access to their offerings. We are excited. Thank you
Pomona is a much nicer school. I’d pick it in an instant over CMU unless the student is a very narrowly focused computer junkie. Or accepted to CMU for the PA Even then, I prefer Pomona hands down.
So there is a new twist: he was just accepted to Brown off of the waitlist. Thoughts?
I still prefer Pomona.
Hmm…I love LACs but Brown has always been a special school for me, so I’d go with that.

Can you elaborate?
First of all, I’m partial to LACs. And Pomona is my favorite LAC. I’ve toured Brown and, have a kid who applied to it, but it never clicked for me. I liked the cohesiveness of Pomona better, the vibe was more relaxed and gentle. Academic talent way up there. The diversity of styles pretty much covered by the Claremont system of schools.
It’s a personal preference. None of my kids even remotely interested in any of the Claremont schools. None even applied. But i found the atmosphere there nearly idyllic. I wish I’d applied back in my day.
