Carnegie Mellon versus UChicago

I am currently being recruited for both colleges as an athletic prospect for football. I know I can get in, as they will help me, in either college. I would major in Economics at UChicago and take some classes at Booth (their business school) as I want to have knowledge about both subjects. At Carnegie Mellon I would major in Business and take a few econ related classes. What is the best decision among these two colleges when thinking about career opportunities, student life, and overall reputation? There seems to be a lot to think about and I don't really know where to start.

These are two comparable institutions. Few thing you should consider:

 1. Do you like Pitts or Chicago better?
 2. Chicago will lean more to Economics and Mathematics more theory oriented, you can achieve the same thing in CMU, but the business school gets more practical.
 3. Have you visited both? Which school you feel at home?

Basically it is a beauty contest, and you be the judge.

Both are great schools with different strengths although one may argue that Chicago is stronger in research overall. If you were to major in Computer Science, I would lean towards CMU; but in this case, you plan to major in Economics. UChicago is hands down one of the top schools in economics in the country if not in the world. The University of Chicago is the only university that has a brand name in economics, i.e. Chicago Economics. That should tell you something.

Visit both schools and find out which school is better fit for you. Good luck.

Unless things have changed quite a bit in the last few years, I would not count on athletic recruiting to guarantee admission to UChicago. A boost, yes … but maybe not a much bigger boost than any other extracurricular activity.

“I have heard a lot about the University of Chicago being one of those schools where a coach’s “push” is more of a “nudge” than anything.”

“When Maloney wants a player, he said, he brings the athlete’s academic file to the admissions office, where “the only advantage I get is quick service.””

Personal experiences:
At least two Bay Area students were pushed over by Athletic Directors on the UChicago wait list, so it is possible.
