Hi,

My son has been accepted at carnegie and urbana for computer engineering, undergrad. When I check the college rankings, I am getting conflicting results! Help

Stiplee

Can’t tell you which is better for this major, but in the Midwest at least, UIUC is the acknowledged engineering school star. It’s a great Big 10 campus but VERY different than the urban environment of Pittsburgh. And even OOS tuition I’m guessing is way less than CM.

Good luck to your son!

If he likes college sports and social life Illinois is more typical and fun. If he prefers hanging in the lab with fellow nerds CMU is hard to beat.

Specifically for computer science and engineering, both are seen as among the very top schools in the country/world. CMU is arguably THE top school, but I don’t think anyone would place UIUC far behind in that field. Almost everything else about the two institutions is going to be vastly different, including sticker price (but not necessarily net price after financial aid).

Not sure if you mean computer engineering or computer science or which rankings you checked. Both schools are in the top five for computer science grad programs. This question has been asked a lot on the boards here - suggest you search “UIUC” on the CMU boards and “Carnegie” on the UIUC boards to see a lot of opinions over the years.

Both schools have excellent reputations and recruiting opportunities. What rankings are confusing you? With more detail we can give more input. There will be a difference between overall school rankings and those within specific fields.
