I am an international student. Recently got accepted to carnegie mellon mcs and waitlisted at scs and uc berkeley. One
thing for sure I want to learn is math. Possible future career may be computer science-related or finance, which I am not
sure right now. Pros of CMU for me is the diversity of mathematics and strength in computer science. I can try hard to double major in math and cs or get into computational finance program after I figured out my road. Pros of Berkeley is it is in Silicon Valley and it is a great university that some people would choose over CMU. I can't visit the schools so please give me some hints about the school atmosphere. Since I need visa to study in the US, I don't have a lot time to wait and have to decide whether to wait for berkeley until the end of May.

bump…

I would recommend Berkeley as it is the better school overall and is in the Bay Area. But CMU CS is also excellent.

I don’t know that Berkeley is “the better school overall.” It certainly is a more academically and socially mixed/diverse school. If you, as an international, are looking for a more traditional American all-encompassing college experience, Berkeley will probably be the better choice. And while Pittsburgh offers a lot more as a city than it once did, it still can’t hold a candle to the SF-Bay Area, even without factoring in weather as a big plus for Cal.

I think SCS at CMU would be hard to turn down, but not on the table right now.

UCB has stronger math program than CMU. Its program was in top 10 in a lot of areas. What areas are you interested in math?

I am interested in analysis and applied math
