Carnegie mellon vs Wesleyan

So far, i am considering either Carnegie Mellon and Wesleyan. I am most likely going to major in Math, Economics, business or physics (pretty much undecided). But for these majors, which is better?

Also, CMU requires me to pay over 30k per year, while wesleyan only wants me to pay 7k per year. Is it worth it to pay over 20k for CMU? my parents can pay around 15k per year but i will have to take loans for the rest.

Hmmm…I think both offer a great education, but are quite different. Honestly, with that cost difference, I would say Wesleyan is a pretty obvious choice. They are rather different in terms of campus culture, though - an interesting choice, though I really think finances make Wesleyan the better option here. But certainly two rather different options…

How is engineering at CMU compared to Wesleyan? My major is most likely going to be engineering or math-econ

Well, since Wesleyan doesn’t have engineering, and CMU is top ten in engineering, I think that answer’s kind of obvious…you do realize Wesleyan is a small, artsy liberal arts college while CMU is a mid-size tech-focused research university, right?

yea thats the problem…

One of my potential majors could be something in engineering and i don’t want to not have the opportunity if i choose to go to Wesleyan.

In my opinion, the cost difference is pretty significant, so if you think you could be happy at Wesleyan with a physics/econ/math major, I would stick with that. If you really, really feel that you want to do engineering, or that CMU is a way, way better, I guess that would be reason to choose CMU. The amount of loans you would end up with isn’t the craziest I’ve seen, but it’s a pretty big consideration, IMO.

Wesleyan has a joint 3-2 program with Caltech and Columbia if you really want to do engineering, so there is that option (don’t know how difficult it is to accomplish, though). You get 2 degrees, with many choices of engineering options. Here is the link:

Not that I know the best answer to your decision, that’s a tough one, but at least know you can do engineering at Wesleyan. You are lucky to have that kind of decision to make!

yea, that is a relief if i do choose to go to wesleyan.
