Does anyone know if having SAMS on your extra-curriculars will be helpful in attaining admission to highly selective universities? The goal of SAMS is to make "good" students "excellent". I was just wondering if Carnegie Mellon has been successful in seeing some of their SAMS graduates gain acceptance to highly competitive schools. If I am posting this in the wrong spot, I apologize. I am a newbie!-)

You should post this in the summer program section…

^This is the correct forum. The Summer Program forum would be appropriate if the OP wanted to know about SAMS or how to apply, but they are asking the role SAMS plays in college admissions. This is similar to asking if writing a research paper or playing the oboe will help with admissions.

SAMS is a selective, scholarship summer program, so it is more helpful than many of the pay to play summer programs. I don’t think CM has published data about students who have attended SAMS, except for those actually applying to CM itself.

Thank you, entomom!

Entomom is correct as always, My D attended last year and Sams really helped her in admissions. According to my D, She had the best time of her life. I do believe the Sams coordinators told the parents that 68% of the kids get into the most selective Universities. My D got into all of her schools of choice-- Harvard SCEA, Columbia and Brown. We did not apply anywhere else since Harvard was her choice. The kids that get into the program are outstanding students in there own right. My D told me the students in the program were all brilliant and of all nationality’s and backgrounds. Great program to get in!!!

Dreamweaver10 - Very encouraging info - thanks!! My son is there this summer. We are amazed at all CMU is pouring into these kids but are more amazed at what a great group of kids are there. My son has said the same thing - brilliant kids and lots of diversity - so awesome!!
