Carolina Research Scholar Program

Son was invited to the CRSP back in April. The email said he would be contacted late summer before classes. He has not heard anything more about it. Has anyone else been contacted? Thanks

I was in an early cohort (2009) of CRSP and I think it is generally more open than joining a typical ‘program’. Here’s the link to the program’s site on the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) page.

[Office for Undergraduate Research at UNC-Chapel Hill](http://www.unc.edu/depts/our/students/students_crsp.html)

I don’t know the specific circumstances of your son but I was contacted after receiving a summer research fellowship through OUR - though I don’t think you need one to qualify. Basically you have to take a few research oriented courses (which he might have already done – there are lists on that link I posted) and then present at a research/professional conference. The undergraduate research symposium held annually at UNC in the spring satisfied this requirement.

The requirements really aren’t that stringent and when I interviewed I think it looked great on my CV/Resume. Not to mention they put “Carolina Research Scholar” on my transcript.

Let me know if you have any more questions about it.

I was also invited and haven’t been contacted. I went to the undergrad research session during orientation and asked about it and was told that we would just be invited to learn more about the program - kind of a huge letdown compared to the rest of the options which were assured admissions into the business and journalism schools, scholarships to do study abroad or research, and first year fellows that at least assures you a FYS of your choosing.

I’m still slightly bitter because I really wanted the study abroad money (international studies & poli sci double major here!), but I don’t really get the point of this program unless there’s more to it, which I’m hoping for. Even just like early notification of research opportunities or a mentor to help us get started would be great. But I’m pretty sure we just get to go to a presentation about it.

To clarify, I mean I don’t understand the point of an invitation to the program (since it’s really not an invitation in the first place - anyone can do it and learn about it easily), not that I don’t get the point of CRSP all together.
