Does anyone know how difficult it is to earn this full scholarship as an out-of-state applicant with perfect stats? Do they look for major awards, or can they be sufficiently impressed without them? Anecdotes are welcome.

Thanks!

UNC hands out approximately 200 merit-scholarships a year (not all Carolina Scholars). OOS the Carolina Scholars program gives a full ride. For the most part, invitations to scholarship day, and to the Honors Program, are based upon your essays, but test scores and GPA are a factor. Once invited to scholarship day, I believe the interview/talking with the person who leads your table is the most important part. I know there are some current students who comment on this forum fairly regularly who worked scholarship day who can give you better info than I can.

Here is the FAQ: [The Office of Scholarships & Student Aid at UNC-Chapel Hill](http://studentaid.unc.edu/studentaid/faq/ssa_scholarship_faq.html)

This is very true. Every admissions officer I’ve talked to at UNC has told me that essays play a very important part in admissions and scholarships.
