Hi guys! I’m currently a seventh-grader and am interested in applying for the CDB scholarship. Are there any tips you guys have things year on maybe about the SAT scores, essays, recommendations, or even honors and awards that applicants need?
They have several online sessions to answer all questions. Also, if you live on the West Coast you have a far, far better chance to win. Winners are seriously impressive kids. Good luck.
There is a SAT minimum requirement even to apply. The CDB website covers almost everything. There are a number of prior CC threads that provide other information. I’ve posted this link before: https://educationaladvancement.org/blog-what-goes-into-selecting-a-caroline-d-bradley-scholar/
@Happytimes2001 What do you mean by people on the west coast having a better chance? I live on the east coast so I’m very nervous.
Don’t be nervous. What I mean is, if you look at the list of winners and the states they come from, they are mainly Western states and have the highest #of winners in CA. They usually have a handful from the East Coast but the numbers aren’t equal. You should still apply. No reason not to, IMO. The year my kid applied I think there were 2-3 winners from New England.
You will also receive great mailings after you apply. Some BS mailings actually cited Caroline Bradley. I think they are looking for these type of kids who often have good ec’s/community activity and good grades and test scores. Kid also received some good camp and seminar info that mentioned the program.
I wish there were more programs like Caroline Bradley.
I totally agree. Do you know how helped fund the scholarship? That person has really impacted a lot of lives.
To answer my own question, I did some research, and it turns out that on the site it says the following:
“The Scholarship was inspired and funded by a generous donor and is now funded by The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation”.
I assume that this ‘generous donor’ was named Caroline Bradley. If I ever get the chance to, I’m going to try to find more information on her work and and her history with the CDB award. First, I actually have to submit the application!
Hi all,
I was wondering first of all how I could raise my SAT reading score. I got a 620 in December but I’m planning on taking it again in March. Are superscores allowed on the application?
@reddyforHYSPM I don’t know if super scores are allowed. My kid just took it 1x. You could ask them. And they have that seminar where you can ask questions online.
Hi @reddyforHYSPM , IEA’s website says, “To be eligible, applicants should receive a score of 20 or higher in either Math or Reading on the ACT or receive a score of 500 or higher in either Math or Critical Reading on the SAT.”
So as long you satisfy one of the scores listed, you are eligible.
Also, note that you have to send them the scores officially.
So your complete scores (for each exam date) will be seen.
You may be thinking of using Score Choice to send only scores on selected dates.
Well, I just tried (without really sending it), and got the message
that they require “all scores” be sent.
(FYI. For college applications it’s the same–some schools allow using Score Choice, some don’t.)
I think IEA’s eligibility criteria is quite broad and generous.
There is no need to superscore.
Hi @mssweeteaa ,
I am pretty sure there is no bias for or against applicants from any coast (or the middle!). They are interviewing some candidates by Skype, so where you are located does not matter.
If you fit the requirements and want to become part of a friendly and supportive community, you should apply.
It is true that it appears there are more Scholars from certain geographical areas.
It is probably due to the historic fact that originally, the Scholarship was only available to applicants from certain states, and as a result, it becomes better known in those states and in high schools that have had Scholars before; i.e., there may be more applicants from certain areas.
Wish all of you the best of luck!
Application deadlines for the Scholarship has been extended. See IEA’s website : https://educationaladvancement.org/about/ieas-statement-on-covid-19-coronavirus/
As of March 13,
"Please note that IEA has extended the deadline for submission of the Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship application to midnight PST April 15, 2020.
We are allowing Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship applicants who were scheduled to take the SAT on Saturday, March 14th, but are unable to do so to take the SAT on Saturday, May 2nd. We also strongly suggest that applicants scheduled to take the ACT in April consider registering for the May 2nd SAT date due to the uncertainty of school closures. Students still must submit their application, without the test scores, by the due date, April 15, 2020."
If the SAT or ACT session you originally intended to take has been postponed or canceled, please note the following message on the IEA website,
https://educationaladvancement.org/caroline-d-bradley-scholarship/how-to-apply/
“DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: Considering the postponement of the SAT and ACT testing dates, we understand that not all Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship applicants will be able to provide current SAT or ACT scores by the extended deadline of April 15, 2020. We encourage students to submit their application as complete as possible. Please note that CDB applicants will not be penalized if they are unable to submit SAT or ACT test scores.”
5 more days. Good Luck!
When my older boys were applying to prep school, we did not know about these opportunities. We will be applying for our daughter. Thanks everyone
@AboutTheSame thanks for the link.
