Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship 2019

Hello All, My son is thinking to apply for this scholarship. Please share any information that would be useful for him. He has asked his teacher for recommendations, but she wanted more info for the recommendation as well.

Thanks!

Please share what SAT scores is needed, Activities, etc… Any information would be helpful

For the teacher send info from the website. I think there may be a minimum SAT score listed as well. It is a combination of factors that lead to finalists, similar to HS and college applications.

Thank you for your reply. Will send the info from the website.

Please do a search for CDB on CC. Several people including myself have put a lot of information about this program to help parents and students entertain if this is right for them.

Hi! I’m a CDB scholar that only recently received the scholarship. I would definitely say that the recommendation is just a general recommendation, like for college, on the student’s character, why they would benefit from a private high school, why they meet CDB’s criteria (https://educationaladvancement.org/caroline-d-bradley-scholarship/criteria-eligibility/).

When writing your essays, start soon and plan ahead so you don’t rush it. I believe there are a variety of topics to choose from; pick the one or two that your son feels he has a unique experience with he is comfortable with sharing that shows off his character and interests.

Don’t worry too much about what achievements he has to put on the profile; that is basically out of your control at this point. Just to let you know: CDB scholars have a wide variety of skill sets; there is really no set type of person they are looking for. But know that IEA is not looking for prodigies or geniuses, some scholars are but do not assume that just because your son doesn’t meet what you think think is prodigy level doesn’t mean he won’t get the scholarship. I’m definitely not a prodigy.

The ACT/SAT score is important, but keep in mind that it is just one part of the application. Do several practice tests to get used to that type of timed test if he’s not used to it (I went through one of those study books, not sure if it impacted my result).

If you are selected as a finalist, the IEA people will try to pick a location to talk to that is relatively close to where you live. Skype interviews are also available, but I think in-person is a lot better.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your reply and Congrats on being the CDB scholar. Huge achievement. My son is taking the SAT this weekend and has prepared well and he has been focusing on the essays as well. Keeping my finger’s crossed. Thank you so much for your reply.

Good luck! My son was a semi-finalist and received a number of 3rd party scholar/ship offers from programs, camps and schools the following year.

Hello Wildcat, Thanks for the luck… i am sure he really can use it. Regarding the 3rd party scholarship/programs, did they contact you or you did on your own? Would it be okay to contact you in future about information on what to do? etc…

The truly amazing thing is that he received calls and emails from out of the blue, ‘you are the type of student…’ Be careful, I don’t know the rules for CC and I was admonished some time ago for offering help. ? But, if it is permitted, I’m more than willing??!

My Son just took the SAT this past weekend and he said the Reading portion was so tough…

@WildCat2023 Would you PM info about the 3rdparty scholarship and etc when ever you get a chance. Thanks!

@wildcat2023 great if you could PM me as well. Thanks.

@wildcat2023 Would love the 3rd party scholarships as well, if you don’t mind. I can’t PM yet as I don’t have the minimum 15 posts at this point. Thank you!

I wasn’t aware that we need 15 posts to PM… would it be possible to share here @WildCat2023

Off the top of my head - He got offered a couple of leadership camps at McCallie and invitation to apply (which is in TN), a couple invitations to apply to 3 of The TENS/TSAO schools. Each had various scholar offers - some based on income some based on merit - but the all offered something. I will say having the semi-finalist as a resume line was asked/mentioned in most of his school interviews.

I would also love to know if there are any other scholarships such as this one. I just found this page, and I’m out of luck for a current 7th grader. Are there any also for kids in high school already based on merit? Many thanks!

According to Wikipedia: “The Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship is the only U.S. scholarship which pays for full tuition for high school students and that is not restricted to students who are from low-income backgrounds.” So unfortunately, you’re out of luck. There’s a lot of scholarships/financial aid packages that private high schools give. At Andover (go big blue!), for example, 1/2 of the students are on financial aid.

We just submitted the application!!! Hopefully will hear some good news… Good luck to everyone who is submitting!

Does anyone know when will they send feedback email about the scholarship?
