Carribean

Okay so I'm from Haiti.....actually my parents are and I'm a by product of them :) Any way. What island is everyone else from? When I was younger I never really saw "Haitian Pride" but now it's like EVERYWHERE which is great with the necklaces, backpacks, umberallas...It was like an automatic thing "You're haitian?" they instantly thought you were a boat person. Now it's like, "you're haitian?"...they answer...I love haitian food or talk about Usher or that lady from the Jamie Foxx show.

My parents are Haitian too. I hate it when people are like "You're Haitian? You don't look like it." Usher is Haitian and he's damn fine lol. I hate also Haitian food with a passion!

Haitian people can look totally different from each other. One person I know that is Haitian looks hispanic, another one looks like the typical medium-skinned African American, and obviously Usher doesn't look like he's the stereotypical Haitian.

I also think people's impressions on the differeces between Haitians and Dominicans is interesting... considering the come from different parts of the same island.

I couldn't believe usher was haitian because it's not he goes around saying he's haitian. I like haitian food but not every day. more like at parties or whatever. But it is weird how Haitians and Dominicans have diff. stereotypes and they're from the same island.

hey guys my parents are haitian too. I am one of the spanish looking haitians and im proud of it lol even though everyone always confuses me. Are you guys applying to college this year or next?? I am never really exposed to smart haitians so its nice to talk to you guys . BTW I am off to Stanford next year after choosing between there and Yale so Im keeping my parents Haitian dream alive. It seems as if you guys are too. Good luck with everything

First off, CONGRATS ON YOUR DECISION TO GO TO STANDFORD! I didn't know you had decided already.

Secondly, I'm going into highschool next year... so I'm not going into college.

P.S. I'm Greek

<~~~~Jamaican...was actually born there, but i've lived here so long you'd think i'm American.

I'm a by-product of everything. . .i look kinda asian, but anyways.

Going to Northwestern (got into HPME) :)
spreading the Caribbean love.

I 'm from the bahamas and i no i show my bahamian pride

In general Haitians are really smart (those that apply themselves) except not alot of them come out and say they're haitian. Stanmaster22: I'm apply to college in 2 years but I have no clue what to do. MY parents.....no my dad keeps hinting (well not really...blantly telling me) to go into the medical field. Good luck with Standford.

Hey, what's up guys. I'm Haitian, too. I'm searching the archives, and I came upon this thread. It's cool to see that Haitians teens are at CC and taking their education seriously. Hope that all of you are successful so that y'all can improve the reputation of Haitians. Nice to see the pride.

P.S.: How do you know Usher is Haitian???

How do I know he's haitian? that has been floating around for awhile so there is no specific place to find it. Some people say you can see it in the nose...
Anyway can you guys check out my new thread, Seeing Stars. You might get it better thatn some other people

Oh, hey, glad to see people from the other side of the island! (I'm Dominican, born, and sort of raised there)

dacoffeebean, keep in mind that the Dominican and Haitian cultures are two very different cultures, even though we come from the same island. They're two different countries, don't forget that. Some actually find it offensive when they're confused with the other.

True, d!sco. In fact, the two countries have a hostile relationship, given their history together. It's weird the two countries aren't as brotherly.

BORICUA BABY!

Yeah i'm Puerto Rican. though caribbean islands have there problem, we're still the sexiest mo fo's out there...

I wanna go to Martinique.

Random... I know.

Btw, Usher at one of his concerts had a Haitian flag du rag and started speaking in Creole.

The best thing about the Caribbean is the food.... ah I could hit up for some right now.

I just realized that my post conflicts...

I meant I love Haitian food with a passion

haha

yeah, the food and music. i don't know about usher being haitian though. this is from his official website

nothing about being creole or haitian or caribbean. i think he's just exploiting the caribbean culture, and he probably practiced whatever he said in creole about 50 million time. when he went to puerto rico he was wearing a puerto rican jersey, du rag, hat...and then said some things in spanish. it was kind of forced and overdone. i think everyone just wants to claim they're from the caribbean now because it's...for lack of a better word...cool.

I know coqui. Well, I wouldn't blame anyone for tryin to play that their from the Carribean. We do have the most beautiful islands and best food, after all;).

Well, I've been representing my heritage when it wasn't considered cool. And, even though the island is having a lot of problems, Haitian pride all the way.

You know what I just realized that is so stupid. SOme schools put their students in ESOL (english as a second lang.) for no reason. They were born in the country but their parents weren't. I wonder if that could have happened to me if I didn't go to a private elementary and middle school. But I doubt it could have happened anyway. But the whole ESOL thing gets on my nerves. If the student can speak, write, and read english, then why are they bothering them.

I love the caribbean lol.

i once heard that usher had a puerto rican flag and spoke in spanish at another concert. oh quick question that's i've been thinking about. what determines ethincity? How am I haitian if I wasn't born there? Maybe I'm thinking about to hard.
