Cars? Alternatives? Help!

I'm just completely confused!!! I've been looking into cars for college but the cost of upkeep is sounding unpractical and rather folly. What are your tips as to getting around the city/cars?

And also... What do you guys think about mopeds/gas scooters? My parents originally promised me a car for college, but it has gotten a bit tight around here so they've been looking into scooters. I'm fine with that (I have to pay for gas!), it's just the convenience of them that worries me!

BTW, I plan to go to college in Oklahoma. The city is mid sized (100,000 range) and is a part of a metro, but it really has a home town feel and design. I can carpool with some friends and family to get back home for holidays and breaks. The weather is warm and muggy in the summer while winters are icy and cold. That means I wouldn't get to use a scooter in the freezing months.

I don’t drive. there is an extensive bus network in my town (it’s free for students). the college also rents out bikes.

Personally I’d rather have a motorcycle than a scooter. They cost about the same, the motorcycle can go faster (so you aren’t limited to slow local roads and you can also get out of a dangerous situation quickly), have bigger tires (so you don’t wipe out if you hit a pot hole) and are louder.
