My son is a junior transfer student. He wants a car at school, we are fine with that. He will be living in a dorm. We have been told that cars are a no-no for juniors. Is this so? Do they enforce this by not letting juniors have parking stickers? Is there a way to find a place to stash it off campus? Are they just not needed? Is there a good way to get to OHare without a car?

I don't claim to be an expert but I went on tour there yesterday and the parking is a nightmare and the guide said having a car is really more of a burden than a plus.

Parking stickers are really expensive, and parking is hard to find. A lot of people park cheaply at Ryan Field (5min shuttle ride from campus), and just bring their cars in on the weekends when anyone can park at NU. Then on sundays they bring their car back to Ryan Field and the shuttle brings them back. Not the most convenient, but most reasonable. But you don't really need a car at NU at all.

I agree that having a car is more of a burden than plus...for going into the city, the trains arent bad and getting to o'hare by cab is only about 30-35 dollars....not bad unless you're flying often

There's a PACE bus that takes you to the airport, or you can take the train, which involves at least one transfer. Public transportation is excellent in general. My daughter has no need or desire for a car at NU.

Cars are not a huge issue if you play your cards right. There is free 24 hour parking on a number of streets connecting to sheridan road. If your child isnt going to be driving much, forget it. About a third of my friends had cars last year (i lived on north campus) mostly sophs and juniors. its a preference thing...you really want it, it can work pretty easily. If you dont really want it, forget about it.
