Cars at Pitt

Are there any rules prohibiting freshman from bringing cars to campus?

I know and expect that someone will tell me that a car isn't necessary on campus and I know it isn't. My parents want me to bring one though and I'm certainly not going to be opposed to it. I know parking is nasty and I will work that out, but I just want to be sure it's okay to bring a car.

I'll mainly use the car for weekend trips to go climbing or other outdoors stuff. During the week I'll just ride the bus.

Thanks

You can certainly bring a car if you’d like to. I don’t recall how limited parking is, but you’ll need to send in a permit (I believe they send permits to everyone via snail mail). I would suggest, though, that if you’re just going to use the car to go climbing, etc. on the weekends, you should instead join the Pitt Outdoors Club–they hike, kayak, skydive, etc. and they provide transportation. No vehicle needed (at least on your part)…

Ya, I’ll definitely be joining the Pitt Outdoors Club and I will use their transportation whenever possible. I can’t even fully explain my parents reasoning behind wanting me to bring a car lol but part of it is the availability to drive home for the holidays rather than flying. (I live in St. Louis)

Thanks for the help

From what I’ve heard, it is possible to bring a car but EXTREMELY expensive to rent (word choice?) a place to park it.

I think you buy a parking permit for the year.

I think it was like $900 a year for the permit.

According to Pitt’s profile on CollegeBoard.com, freshmen are permitted to have cars. Unfortunately, I don’t know how much Pitt charges for permits. If you decide to move off campus as an upperclassman, you can obtain a parking permit from the city of Pittsburgh, which is $20/year. The disadvantage is that you have to park on the street, which means you’d have to contend with finding a spot and street cleaning (only in the spring/summer). Some apartments/houses do have parking available, which ranges in price. Sometimes it’s free, sometimes it isn’t. The apartment building where I live now charges residents $70/month to park in a lot; however, I opted for the permit through the city and haven’t had any problems thus far. I’m not sure if you would be able to obtain a city permit since you’ll likely be living in the dorms, but given the price, it’s definitely worth looking into.

Do you feel like a car is needed as a freshman at pitt?

We have a car sitting in the driveway here and my daughter has no interest in keeping it at Pitt. She uses public transportation or walks.

No, you don’t need a car unless you have a job that a bus can’t take you to. Same here, we have son’s car in the driveway while he is at Pitt.

I have a classmate who has a car to drive to work (at the mall), but most students here don’t have cars. Btw OP, St. Louis must be like a 10 hour drive from Pitt, if your parents want you to dedicate a day’s worth of time to drive home and back that kinda sucks.
