Cars for college?

Would you buy a car in college? I know they say you can around without a car, but wouldn't it be a pain to have to take the bus every time you went off campus?

And if you do intend to buy a car, what make/model =)

it depends a lot on the type of campus you go to. a car is far more important in rural/suburban campuses than in large cities.

I believe an old joke goes that having a car isn't as important as having a friend with a car you can borrow. Nothing says romantic anniversary dinner like a ride on the subway ; )

It varies from school to school. For example, my brother goes to Boston University. Having a car there requires buying a parking pass (which does not guarantee a parking space) and then navigating said car around the web of cowpaths that is Boston. It's prohibitively expensive and useless, and very, very few people bring cars. On the other hand, my cousin goes to some school in Indiana (I'm blanking on the name at the moment) and he says that having a car is necessary to get anywhere interesting, and that he's the go-to guy in his circle of friends because he's the only one with a car.

You gotta check out the scene at the school you'll matriculate at -- most colleges don't allow freshmen to have cars too.
