Cars in College

Im thinking of buying a pretty decent car in college, a Range Rover or Porsche Cayenne, how will people's attitude be towards me in college? Will it be different because of my car?

Are you going to a really expensive college? Otherwise the car might be worth more than your education.

Why do you need a luxury car for college..?

no actually, im going to Syracuse, its a pretty expensive college, however that aside, itll be snowing there a lot, therefore im going to need a SUV type car, and generally i like nice cars, but how will peoples attitude change towards me?

It really depends on what everyone else drives.

How much does it snow in Syracuse?

It snows.. enough.. here in Minnesota and my 1999 Dodge Stratus handles the snow just fine. Sometimes its not the car that makes the drive safer, its how you drive it.

it goes upto -19 or -20 degrees, quiet cold, but back to my question how will people's attitude be? will they not like me cuz theyll think im some rich kid?

At Syracuse I couldn't say. I don't know the attitude.

At certain schools, you would need it to fit in (the "rich prep" schools). At certain others, it would alienate you like nothing else (UCSC) except with that group of other rich kids...

Personally, I think it's not worth your money or time to have one. You may need a car in college, but you most certainly do not need a Porche SUV. Get real.

Yeah, I have a feeling that if you're planning on buying a porsche or a landrover or whatever for college, that people are already going to have their mind made up about you...enjoy.

I'd roll my eyes at you, wonder why you'd spend that much money while you're in college, and ask you to lend me 20 bucks because I'm basically out of money for the semester.

Another point-

snow=salt on the roads
salt=cars rusting

Don't waste your money.

I don't believe the temperature directly effects the amount of snow you have- two years ago it was freaking cold here Minnesota, but there wasn't too much snow.

A friend of mine was thinking about purchasing a Toyota Supra (a pretty good car), but was advised against doing it because of the weather here- he would have to have it in the garage half the year to avoid damage.

How would it affect what people think of you: Probably negative.

Do you really need it: Keep in mind. College is expensive, driving a regular car like mine for a couple years will be more than worth it.

My first reaction would be extravagant snob...sorry.

Trust me, snow does not necessitate an "SUV-type car." Especially if you're a college student.

snow does not necessitate an SUV no matter what...maybe you need to learn how to drive if that is a problem.

If you had any car like that in college, I would laugh at you and write you off. Then I would laugh as someone else keys it because they don't like you.

Well, not really adding anything to the thread, but I went and looked at a 1999 Porsche Boxter today. Nice car but I'm not sure it's the right car for college... I'm not really a rich brat and that's the attention I think I'd draw(not making judgements about you but that's how society views a younger person in such a nice car) We were looking at new Miatas and they had the used Boxter for quite a bit less money. It had like 50K miles on it but was in great condition.... I'll probably stick with my good ole Accord!

an Accord is a perfect care for college :)

durable, small and easy on the insurrance and gas money but it still manages to have a lot of room inside and drive well.

No offense to Syracuse students, but what are you attempting to accomplish by buying a $60,000 SUV at Syracuse?

you will come off as being a douche bag, seriously you dont need a porche in college, get a porsche only if you deserve it and by deserve it I mean buying one after you get a job. Why not but a Toyota 4Runner or a Ford explorer and come of as being less douche-bag like instead of spening 60k plus for a car you dont need when other students will be trying to make ends meet to pay for a college tuition.

may i suggest a jeep cherokee? i have a '97 jeep and it handles great in the snow. buying a porsche or range rover seems like a waste of money for a car to take to college.

why not buy a little car and conserve gas.. I can't stand SUV's.

get the doubles Rs on dubs and you would get hella girls....it may seem shallow but its true

Hell, my father can easily afford to buy me those cars...but he won't. There's something to be said for learning the value of a dollar, and at the very least not living a spoiled life...because the average starting salary out of Syracuse will not support that kind of lifestyle, and neither should your father by that age.

I'm going to disagree with everyone else on the thread and say: go for the car. In fact I think you will fit in better because people will want to take road trips with you. We all know upstate New York isn't the most happenin' place lol.
BUT I wouldn't recommend an SUV. Like people above me said, you don't need to have a luxury car for snow. How about a Subaru? I have one in the Impreza model...true it isn't a Porsche but it handles in the snow, ice, and heavy rain beautifully (I live in CT so I know what driving in bad weather is like!) As long as you have an all-wheel drive I think you'll be okay.
