What percent of kids would you say bring a car to school?

Gosh it’s hard to say…Some instate kids do and some don’t. Some OOS kids do and some don’t. I’ve seen license plates in the parking lots from all over the country, so some kids must drive in from pretty far away.

I’m guessing that about 1/2 - 2/3 do. My kids currently only have one car down at Bama because they rarely need a car…it mostly just sits in the covered lot at Ridgecrest South. It was silly to have 2 cars just sitting there. With the Crimson Ride, they rarely have any need to drive.

Thanks, we’re buying our oldest (jr in high school) a car this weekend. This car is to get her back and forth to college safely as we don’t want to drive 5hrs one way to pick her up each time she wants to come home. She can also drive it to my sister’s in B’ham.

I can’t help feeling a little like I’m spoiling her by getting her a car. I know it seems so easy to get around Bama without one. It’s good to know your kids share one too, since I’ll have another going to college 2 yrs later. I’m not sure they’ll go to the same school though.

My “son” didn’t take his car down there, but fortunately his roomates have theirs. He certainly doesn’t need it around campus, but it’s nice to have to get off campus to places like the mall & Buffalo Wild Wings for tuesday night wing night.

He said they also drive to the rec center as it’s a pretty good walk and he’d have to take 2 crimson ride buses to get there.

There’s no reason not to take a car if you can afford it (note also that residential student parking permits are close to $250/yr, commuter student parking permits about $70 less). You don’t need a car to get around campus, you need one to get around town. However, remember also that ZipCars are available on campus.

My son is OOS, and this is his second straight year he has not had a car. His three suite mates have them, as does his girlfriend. He has found very little need for wheels. If he needs to go to the mall or store, he rides with someone. Publix is on the edge of the campus, and you can reach it by using the Crimson Ride.

Besides, he learned that not having a car means a huge reduction in his insurance payments.
