Carthage

Anyone know anything about Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin?

Anyone?

..

34 views and not one post? Give me something.

Some of my sons' friends go there because they've been recruited for the men's volleyball team. You can see their admissions standards on collegeboard.com I've never known anyone who went there for the academics, but it is a small school, and not well known (as you are finding out!)

What do you want to know? It's less than hour from where I live, and we know kids who go there, too, like midwesterner does. But what do you want to know?

Do athletes predominate there? Do students clear out on weekends?

what treetopleaf asked would be good, especially since ill be an athlete if i go there. any info on dorms, social life, campus appearance, city of kenosha, and the hardness of classes would be good. also, how would a future employer look at someone with a degree from carthage? thanks.

anyone got answers to the things i want to know?

bosox097 - you'll need to increase your patience level - many adults who post on CC have very busy lives and may only check in once or twice a day (or once or twice a week), so be patient. Although I've never been to Carthage, I just had dinner this evening with a friend whose daughter is a freshman there and is doing well. I do know that I've heard the campus is gorgeous - it's on Lake Michigan. I also know that there is a social life - I know kids do party, but social life has many connotations. It depends on what you are, or aren't looking for. Kenosha is kind of so-so; not so much going on, but Milwaukee and Chicago are probably equal distances from Kenosha. There is a commuter train from Kenosha into Chicago, so there are many possibilities for students without cars to get into Chicago. The hardness of the classes is going to depend on what kind of student you are, and what kind of classes you will be taking. I know some very bright kids that go there and love it (are probably part of an honors program), and some average students who go there and love it. Regarding employment after college, the students I know who have graduated from there have been able to get jobs, and one I know in particular has had two great summers as an intern with Allstate Insurance. Chances are if you stay in the Midwest, most employers will know Carthage; if you return to the East (I'm assuming you're from out East from your screen name), not as many will be aware. But if you land some good internships, then that'll be your selling point.

have you checked out what Princeton Review has to say? This might help.

thanks teriwtt. sorry for not being patient, but i noticed you were online, so i figured id bump it up. thanks for the info though. if you know anything about the dorms, it would be much appreciated. also, im actually from michigan, i just love the red sox.

yea, but I tend to stay in the Parent's Cafe. I will e-mail my friend I had dinner with tonight. She visited her daughter a couple of weekends ago to take her out to dinner. When I hear back from her, I will post her comments. If you really need to reach me, PM me; I'll know sooner that someone is looking for me than if I wait to visit the college discussion forum.

all right, thanks again teriwtt.

just so happens that the girl whose mom I had dinner with the other night, was home this weekend, and I had a brief chance to run a few questions by her. She pretty much agreed with everything else I said earlier, and these are things she said about Carthage: campus is beautiful, small and compact. Athletics are big - if you are interested in playing a sport, you should be in contact with the coach of that sport now. Most kids are very involved with extracurriculars, which also create a social life. If you tend to be on the shyer side, the extracurriculars are very beneficial in helping you to meet people. There are parties, but if you're not a drinker, then most kids feel comfortable attending parties without drinking - they don't feel peer pressure. Although it is not a commuter school by any means, most kids live relatively close to home and there's always a certain number who goes home on weekends. Dorms are great - all are co-ed, except for one each of all male and all female. They actually contract with a local Best Western hotel for some of their student housing. For entertainment, some kids take the Metra train from Kenosha to Chicago for stuff, while others take the bus from Kenosha into Milwaukee for things. There is one main cafeteria on campus that everyone uses, but other smaller eating establishments, such as Pizza Hut, Einstein Bagels, Starbucks, etc. Students do try to grocery shop whenever possible so they're not stuck with the same eating location for three meals a day/seven days a week. Since she's just a freshman, she didn't have anything to say about future employers. The difficulty of classes depends on what kind of student you are already, but generally not too difficult. If you're a mediocre/poor student now, and don't want to step it up a notch for college, you could struggle.

Hope this helps.

I live about 15 minutes away from Carthage and go there about twice a year for chorus competitions/recitals...anyway, my brother applied there so the most information I can offer on the school is that it has a beautiful, small campus and they offer very good merit aid. hope this helps. :)

thanks a ton teriwtt. you too, faransaa.
