Carving out time for campus visits

Well…got two local visits in this week! I am feeling a little better! Did a late afternoon visit on President’s day to one and boy was it crowded! Mini tours and people everywhere since high school had the day off. It was a very worthwhile visit. Had another yesterday. Even though it was a Saturday and early to mid morning the campus was active and students busy around the field house and student union. The cafeteria was packed and lively since they only have one (St. Olaf). D2 wants to go back in the spring so that’s a good sign! Now we just need to find time to get away for the out of town schools in the spring. I think I have convinced D2 that she can miss a class or two to make some trips. :)

idic5, I understand completely! There is no perfect answer. Visit when you can, and if you miss scholarship interviews, then perhaps it just isn’t in the cards for your son to go to that particular school. We have not been able to see every school, it just isn’t possible. Good luck!

Sandybeach, very good summer planning! What a nice memorable trip for you and your Dad. You originally had fifty schools that you were interested in? Wow! Twenty is a wow, too! I can’t even comprehend the number of applications, essays and recs for that many schools! Did you actually apply to that many, or just look at them?

Thanks for this thread! I’m frustrated by the attitudes of the coaches about all this. Our spring break time is now scheduled with HS games (softball in our case) and therefore kids have to be back 2 days early for practice. This cuts our college tour from 6-7 days to 3-4 days. Something is just not right with that. An AAU or Travel team might be different, but you’d think a HS team would do everything it could to support a child who is going through a very difficult time in his/her life and needs that time away to make some big decisions. Let’s keep our priorities straight here!

I did my college visits during Winter Break and Spring Break, my junior year. That way, I could do overnights as well.

Hannie27 - I feel your pain, and that of all the others on the thread. Just found out that our coach scheduled a Friday NIGHT track meet the night before D is taking her SATIIs, oh joy! Can’t even rest for the testing, let alone go on visits…

I spent hours registering for six college tours and hotels and planning logistics over spring break, and coach now says they need to practice every morning during break!!! This is a school where maybe one kid every few years gets any kind of athletic scholarship but the rules are that if you’re on a varsity sport you have to be willing to practice over vacation. And kid works most of the summer and has a fall sport that takes up every Saturday.

So she’ll just be applying to a lot of schools without seeing them, even though we live near NYC and all the schools are within four hours driving. Maybe we’ll visit some deserted campuses on summer weekends.

Muffy

I would be spitting tacks.

try to do your campus visits during the long holidays like summer and winter breaks. semester breaks are also good for looking at colleges around the area.
