Since this is through tisch, there is a paper application for this major. anyone know how selective or what it takes to get into this program?

Probably doesn't take much...I can't imagine a cinema studies major being in that much demand.

ranisparkle, Cinema Studies is one of the great programs at Tisch. A couple of kids from my h/s are in the program and love it. It's one of the smaller departments in Tisch, but like all of them, is fairly selective. Basically what you need, in addition to the usual good academic stats for NYU, is a portfolio which will detail your experience with cinema affiliated activities, and you also have to write a fairly extensive essay on a related topic. The ability to write well is also a big plus. There are lots of opportunities for CS grads, despite what some people seem to think. Just a few areas that are filled with CS grads: journalistic publications for theatre and film, film and theatre critics, many varieties of development jobs with film making and production companies, film editing, sound technician, many have curating positions, marketing and publicity, and of course, some are also actors.

Unlike the Tisch program, I don't think the CAS cinema studies major requires a portfolio of any sort......just an essay. I don't see there being much demand for this, so I'm sure if you want to study it, you can.

thanks you guys are a lot of help. Would I be studying with tisch students if i took this? I read the application, and it is only an essay about why, and a term paper... seems fairly simple, it is just that this program would be a deciding factor for if i wanted to go to NYU, as i hope to major in sciences also... yeah wierd. i know.

i think i answered my question. it is to be taken at tisch, so im assuming that its not just CAS students at tisch, rather, its integrated within the tisch school.

ranisparkle, I think I misunderstood you in my earlier post. Cinema Studies at Tisch is a major and a degree program. Are you referring to a particular CS class that is offered through the Open Arts curriculum to non-majors? Maybe you can show me a link as to what you're looking at. Open arts classes are not taken with majors. If you're looking at portfolio requirements, then that is for a major and you would have had to apply to Tisch initially to be in that program.

jwblue has posted the link, which is connected to the CAS website.

Rainsparkle,

I'm sure they have contact info on the link for any questions you might have....your questions will probably be much better answered by the department than in any forum like this.

thats a good point, i'll call them up on monday and ask directly. thanks for all your information though!

Sorry, ranisparkle, I did totally misunderstand you. You're talking about the pilot project which was started this year at CAS. And yes, they do share some of the same classes with the Tisch CS students. These classes are definitely different than the Open Arts classes. This year they had about 10 kids and next year they've accepted about 20. It's a small program so far but apparently the demand was much bigger this year than last. So, if you're interested once you're at CAS, you apply in March for fall of 2006. Sorry if I confused you earlier. :)

great. thanks so much, knowing there is competition will definitely drive me to prepare myself freshman year. I have no filmy sort of stuff in my background though.. i have theatre (acting), even awards, but that wont help right?

Theater and acting stuff won't help you at all...this is a CAS program, not a Tisch one even though the classes are in Tisch. I think you should be fine if you write a decent essay explaining your interest in the program.

Good luck.

essay writing i can do. thanks so much.

Rani - Theatre and Acting Will help you a good deal. But first you should have high stats. My son was accepted to Critical Studies at USC similar to Cinema Studies at Tisch. He is an excellent writer, but we really feel his edge was his acting. Heavy EC in acting and theater will definatly give you the hook for acceptance as long as you also have the writing skills. Good luck, it is a great program to apply for right in NYC with student access to all the theatres.

yeah as of now, highschool stats arent really a problem, and i received merit aid to NYU, so im assuming they liked me. Freshman year, i'll just have to find some hook for this program and jump into it! while balancing the city and the classes.. oh goodness.

Ebay:

You are mistaken, this is a CAS major we're talking about, not a Tisch one. CAS does not require portfolios, and all that theater/acting stuff...its an academic school.

Furthermore, and correct me if Im wrong here, I think Ranisparkle has already been accepted to NYU.

Oh, I did not know that he was already accepted! I though he was going to apply for 2006. I was just trying to let him know that his acting stuff is a great EC for acceptance into any course of study at Tisch.

yeah, i've been accepted, and right now im deciding between colleges, and its coming down to the nitty gritty stuff, because of the huge price tag with NYU.
and actually, my essay for CAS was about acting, so for any other prospectives out there, acting really helped me with CAS, just as my focal point outside the classroom.
