Hi I'm going to be a freshman next year and I'm not sure of the difference between the theory and policy concentrations for an economics major at CAS. I'm looking for whatever is more business oriented rather than academia.

Theory is, quite obviously, more academic.

econ a a whole is more academic, if you wanted a business education you should have done finance @ stern, unless you didnt get in/wanted a more liberal education.

of the two, policy is more theory oriented while theory is more math oriented. You dont choose what concentration you want when you go in so i wouldnt worry about that for a while.

Policy is more practical and business oriented. It’s designed to prepare you for a job in the real world straight out of undergrad. Theory is more theoretical and it prepares you for post grad studies in econ. Overall, policy is easier because it doesn’t have all the math.

I’m probably going to be doing theory. I don’t want to take two semesters of “math for economists” since I’m transferring in; my real math classes that I’ve taken won’t give me credit for those. If I do theory, my real math classes will actually fulfill some of the requirements.
