Thought I would start a discussion thread for Case athletes who have been accepted ED or EA. I was accepted EA so I am not committed, but I was recruited. I am seriously considering Case and might visit soon. What have you guys heard about life as a Case athlete?
I am a parent. I know many swimmers at Case through my student and they have had a really good four years of swimming competitively for Case. Its a friendly group of athletes and athletes tend to live together in housing, both Greek and non Greek. Also high school athletes at Case stick with some college varsity athletes and may play IM or club sports at Case. Go meet your coach and team now, that will help you decide.
@Coloradomama – since I think you have a child at Case and GT, could you comment on the difference in academics? D was admitted EA to both and is interested in Biomedical Engineering.
Georgia Tech’s rankings are higher for biomedical engineering but we had to take it off our list because as an out of state public, we felt we wouldn’t get enough merit/need aid to make it feasible for us. Case western’s needs meet package is doable for us. I don’t think you can go wrong with either for BME
@ViolaMom12 There is a lot to say. Case is more well rounded, with many students studying social sciences, business, accounting, psychology, premed, prelaw as well as engineering, and a much smaller overall size. Case offers better music options if one of your kids plays viola, Case has great music ensembles and amazing venues for performance. GaTech has one orchestra though too ,but my kid there did not continue his instrument, so I am less familiar. Case has really fine music teachers from CIM, if your student is wanting a double music major or a music minor. On the engineering side, GaTech offers amazing clubs, like an entire club devoted to medical robotics, and the Emory/GaTech program is now ranked number 1. I think GaTech is much more techy, in feel and less focused on reading and writing. I slightly prefer Case for the general education piece and balance. Case students all take three seminar reading/writing classes to get any degree, including nursing degree.
GaTech has some pretty amazing engineering and CS options with math that is out of this world for rigor and
excellence. I really do prefer GaTech’s math department over Case Western’s. (My Case kid double majored
in math and physics, my GaTech kid has a CS major and math minor ) GaTech math is harder, with lots of honors options, and a full training class for the Putnam exam, and many math clubs to learn even more math. GaTech is truly excellent in mathematics. Case Western is outstanding, but just a lot smaller, with less math research going on.
. Case is more undergraduate focused than GaTech. What I mean by this is the graduate PhD programs are there but a little weaker than GaTech so Case undergrads are sometimes better/stronger than the grad students, and get a lot of attention. GaTech is more like Stanford or MIT, where training up graduate students are the main job of the school. Case professors really really care, but GaTech professors often will work with undergraduates too, but it seems a bit harder to get a lot of time with GaTech professors. For example, if you have mostly As at Case, you can become a TA. for say freshman math or chemistry. At GaTech, to become a freshman math TA, you will be battling all the top students for a chance at a TA job ,which gets students in close weekly contact with professors. Both schools offer good research options and senior research work. I don’t know a lot about biomedical though, as neither kid studied that subject. If you ask specific questions I can try to answer.
I like both of these schools for different reasons. Both locations are interesting, with plenty to do.
@Coloradomama – thanks so much for all the information!
