<p>Both phrases are correct. </p>
<p>For the first case “than” is used as a “preposition”. Prepositions take “objects”.</p>
<p>So In the phrase: … “than <someone>” you need an object. “me” is the object form of I. </someone></p>
<p>For the second case “than” is a conjunction. The phrase that follows the conjunction is “subject-verb” – e.g. I am.</p>
