Hi all,

I am having trouble deciding between OSU and case western reserve. I am a pre-med, planning to major in biomedical enginnering. So, I am trying to get a perspective on the pre-med programs of both colleges to aid in my decision.

Thank you :)

Osu is very very good for premed. Id say osu

thank you for replying but can you elaborate further on why exactly OSU’s premed program is better than case’s?

Failatlife, the tiers are for medical schools, not for premed. invaliderror, both OSU and Case prepares you well for medical school. I think it has to come down to research + comfort level. So first, Case is pretty much known for research. Not everyone who applied to med school will have some kind of research background but those who do make a really good case for why they should be admitted. Make sure, though, that you are comfortable. Getting into Case is great but if you’re not comfortable it’s not worth it.

Whoops I didn’t see that

So case provides more research opportunities than osu? what about the premed advising? Also, I am more concerned with the opportunities and price rather than fit as i a quite a versatile guy and believe that i would be able to fit in pretty much any school. Case is more expensive than OSU (paying 11k for case compared to 3k for osu)

I don’t know much on pre-med/BME, but I can tell you that Case is in close proximity to the Cleveland Clinic which is world renowned and the University Hospital System which is great.
Personally, I think it comes down to preference-either choice is great. I’m actually trying to decide between the two as well!

@notaprincess oh really? we are on the same boat then. so which school are you leaning towards at this stage of your decision? I am living cleveland so i figured that i can shadow/volunteer at cleveland clinic during summer breaks but i do not know if there are any exclusive case-cleveland clinic opportunities to be exploited.

I want to pursue ChemE. Case is my first choice, but OSU is a bit better financially. After grants and scholarships Case costs 27k and OSU costs 22k (after my freshman year is over-received a 7k scholarship at OSU only for freshman year). I like it better at Case though as I prefer a smaller school and the research opportunities. Really it’s going to come down to money and my parents. My dad does not like the idea of me going to Case for financial reasons.

As far as Cleveland Clinic goes, I would ask the BME department or search the website. I know they do partner up with UH.

As a current Case student, I’d encourage you to look at the social aspect of both schools, not only the academics. They are radically different and I know many students at Case who just wouldn’t be happy at OSU and i’m sure visa versa… Case is a much smaller very individualized and focused atmosphere, less focused on partying. You can find it but more students are focused on academics and extracurricular life certainly. OSU is huge, very sports and spirit centered, and with that comes a lot of partying obviously. It depends on the atmosphere where you want to spend 4+ years. That would be a deciding factor for me if I were in her shoes, as both are great for what you wants to go into.

If you are a premed you will need a very high GPA to get into medical school. It is much harder to earn an A at Case than it is at OSU. I went through a program at Case. Granted it was many years back, but there were very few Case UGs in my class other than the PPSPs. D2 is applying in the current cycle as a premed and received excellent scholarships from both schools but is choosing neither. Unless I was very confident in my ability to get an A in Organic, Biochem and Physics at Case in classes with students majoring in those subjects, I would not choose it for premed.

Both of you have valid points here. For fit, Case would be a much better fit as i would prefer a more studious and focused environment and i am not really much of a partier- not really a fan of sports by the way. However, with OSU being such a ginormous college, i believe that i would be able to find a group of friends there.

As I am selected for the honors program at OSU, I feel that the academic rigor of OSU’s honors and Case’s program would be around the same so the ease of scoring As should be similar.

I come from a less well-to-do family so the financial aid is an issue. I have to pay 12k(loans plus summer savings) for Case whilst i would be able to save 7k if i go to OSU. And the fact that i am going for Med sch don’t really improve my finances. So i am wondering about how good their Pre-Med advising are to help me make a decision.

Thank you all for your replies :)

invaliderror, have you made your decision yet? I’m curious as today I decided on OSU. It’s bittersweet that I won’t be going to Case but I’m loving the idea of OSU now :)

@notaprincess: I have not really decided yet as there are some factors I need to make confirm first(like credits) but I am most probably going to OSU on the basis of OSU being cheaper. So once OSU confirms that they would be able to give me my transfer credits for the A-level exams i took in high school, I would go to OSU. If not, I would have to reconsider my choice. Just wondering what pulled you over to OSU? had the impression that you are tending more towards joining case.

Hmmm, well as far as my decision goes it was because I was having such a hard time with the financial side and would have had to heavily rely on my unreliable mother to make it work. It is also more convenient for me as I will not have a car my first two years and can easily find everything on campus, Columbus has more internships and more possibilities of job recruiting/excellent alumnae connections. Also, I will only know one other person at Case versus the many (including a cousin) who I know at OSU. I feel like Case is a bit limited on social offerings. I would really like to go out to a few parties and have fun every once in a while.

Mostly, I realized I was just being stubborn and didn’t want to do what my parents thought was best.

notaprincess: ok I would be seeing you at osu. looks like financial aid is the deciding factor. see you there!

I was also trying to decide between Case & OSU for biomedical. It came down to show me the money — I love them both but we can’t afford Case so OSU here I come – honors program, look for me in Lane Hall!!!

haha i am going for taylor’s instead
