I'm trying to compare Case Western with the University of Rochester for quality of life.

Aspects that I particularly care about, ranked by importance:
Academics: Extremely high
Facilities: Very high
Local Atmosphere: Medium (don't care about sports, do care about culture)
Girls: Medium (brains, not beauty)
Drug Scene: Medium-low (I don't want to drink or use drugs, nor do I want to be encouraged to)
Transportation: Medium-low (as long as it works reasonably well, don't care)
Campus Strictness: Low (I prefer self-imposed reasonable behavior)

Social life is important to me. My tastes are a bit geekier/nerdier/whatever, so I'm more interested in gaming, movies, anime, etc. than I am in athletics (don't care about athletics at all). I did get to see Case's improv group perform when I visited; loved it. Stuff like that is good.

I have to admit that I'm leaning towards Case. Appears to be better for engineering, plus Cleveland seems to be a nicer city than Rochester (coming from Boston). I don't really have the data for anything else.

Thoughts? Experiences? Also, it'd help me if you could state your affiliation/position when you post (e.g., Case student, Rochester alumni, tech company HR). Thank you for your help!

D (athletic, but not much of a partier) is considering the same 2 schools.

I'm leaning towards Case, simply b/c I have a friend who is a prof at the law school and can keep an eye on her. Roch, on the other hand, is just a short, cheap flight away (via Jet Blue).

Neither D nor I see much diff b/c the two shcools. Are we missing something?

some clarifications. despite the differences b/w social life, they both aren't party schools for sure! Like nyc said, they are pretty similar in term of everything. So what do you want to major in? It is a big part to determine which school would fit you more.

I'm planning to major in mechanical engineering. The ME department at Rochester struck me as rather small (something like 20 people per year), but it's supposedly still quite good. The small size is a turnoff, though.

The Social Life at Case didnt seem to be as bad as people said it was at Case....I went to 2 parties when I visited (and the students had no problem telling a prospect where a party was :P.) I also know that Case is known for good engineering (though I dont know if it is specifically ME)

Bottom line: if you want a smaller transition step from HS to a college bubble, pick UR. If you are looking for being slammed right into the real world right off, pick Case.

If you want engineering you should definitely go to Case. It's a very career oriented school, and much more of a research UNI than Rochester which is, I think, very LACish. Case also has a quarter of a billion dollars more in endowments.

I'm kinda debating between those schools as well, along with Brandeis. Case was far more generous with aid however...

Cleveland is much nicer (and bigger) than Rochester. Also Case is more inside Cleveland than U of R is in Rochester, it's more in the suburbs (which can either be good or bad)

SebmaFSX_53, about undergraduate research at UR, you should take a look at the journal they publish of research papers written by
undergraduates
at UR. It certainly holds its own against any Ivy type school.

You know those 6 qualified kids who were rejected by Harvard for each one that was accepted? A lot of them end up at Tufts and UR. ;)

The academics at both Case and UR can take you wherever you want to go. You have to visit to see for yourself if the social aspects of either school is a fit.

Go to case? why? because I probably am! :p Really though, these two probably have a lot of cross-acceptances. I think you need to visit and where you fit better (have you visited already?) :p

Don't listen to what Jenny said, because she is waitlisted by URochester. You should visit both schools, and then make a decision. This is the most objective way to find out which school is the best fit for you
