Case Western 2023 RD

Hey guys, that’s strange for not having one thread like this. So I’m opening one. Feel free to share information here!
P.S. RD results expected March the 20th, good luck!

Do they do any earlier notification?

@putinator I don’t think so. Based on previous years threads the results were coming mostly around the date they put on the website.

I wouldn’t suggest going to Case Western. I went there in my freshman year and the academics were not at the level I expected. The classes there are hard but the education you get from them is pretty standard. Case is also unheard of outside of Cleveland which makes it hard to apply for internships or for transfer to another college. So basically if you go to Case Western you will work hard but not get much out of it.

I’ve heard some similar stories: we have a good family friend who went to CW for his first year, but then transferred to a UMass school. He said that the area around CW wasn’t great at all, and while he was okay with the school, it wasn’t spectacular.
BUT I’ve also heard people who LOVE Case Western. I think it really depends on the person; which makes it even more important to visit and even sleep over.

@Aroa99 likes to state how standard Case is. Case is not unheard of outside Cleveland…it is a top 50 school. Any college you transfer to can easily get info about Case. I disagree that if you go to CWRU you won’t get much out of it. if you want to see where students go after Case, see here:

We visited Case last summer and I thought it could be a great fit for S19. There are plenty of colleges in cities that are nearby some not as nice areas. I agree that there are lots of factors why kids pick certain schools. My 3 kids have all had very different criteria. In S19s case, the programs offer what he wants and the orchestra and local sports are a nice perk.

My daughter is a junior at CWRU. She loves the place and says she does not know anyone in her extended friends group who transeferred out. In fact statistics would support this: With 92.0% of students staying on for a second year, Case Western Reserve University is one of the best in the country when it comes to freshman retention. Nationwide, the average first year to second year retention rate is 72.0%.

@Wizard2 and/or anyone else who has direct experience with CWRU … what would you (or your student) say is the distinguishing feature about Case that makes it THE best place for them? S19 waiting to hear about admission later this month and will only have 1 month to make final decision with 2 other great options already known. Thanks for your insights!

CWRU is very accepting. She says it’s not pretentious. It’s a place where there is really no fear to be one’s true self.

@COMom2boys

I am not sure any college has just one thing that makes it unique:

CWRU was created from the merger of a ** LAC + STEM **school in 1969. So you get people majoring in the liberal arts, nursing, business, as well as engineering. Unlike some engineering schools, you get more of a male female balance.

Case also has a ** Single Door admissions** policy…once you are admitted you can major in whatever you want…no applying to the engineering or business school or whatever…so you can also easily change majors (obviously you need to meet the requirements)

Case is in the University Circle, Home to world-renowned museums, prestigious universities, nationally recognized hospitals, Cleveland Orchestra, eclectic restaurants, beautiful parks, and cozy spaces.

Case is minutes from downtown Cleveland and you get a free RTA pass

Case is known for ** Merit Scholarships**

Case is affiliated with the ** Cleveland Institute of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Art.**
All art programs are considerably enhanced by close cooperation with and access to the facilities of cultural institutions located in University Circle, in particular The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Cleveland Institute of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland.
The Department of Music at CWRU offers undergraduate students a wide range of opportunities for musical study and participation, many of which take advantage of our Joint Music Program with the Cleveland Institute of Music. https://music.case.edu/prospective-undergraduate-students/general-information/

There is no issue getting ** housing ** on campus, or off.

Case has the ** think[box] Maker Space **
ThinkBox at Case is 50,000 square feet of space for engineers, business majors and patent attorneys
to come together to innovate. I think this is unique, even MIT does not offer this cross section of
resources in one place, the maker space, the business partners and the attorneys all for you to invent, prototype
patent and launch a start up while an undergrad or grad student or MBA student at Case Western.
Watch the students talk about it on this video:

Case will support you if you are more into the practical Co-op or more theoretical** research.**

If you are looking for a ** health profession **, Case has a nursing, medical, and dental school and all the advising and next door hospitals for volunteering/clinicals.

If you are interested in being an ** Entrepreneur** , there is LaunchNet to help you launch your business.
https://students.case.edu/career/entre/launchnet/

If you happen to be ** LGBT: **
Case Western Reserve is among the Top 25 LGBT-Friendly Colleges and Universities, according to Campus Pride, a national organization that aims to make universities safer and more inclusive for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals. The recognition follows Case Western Reserve’s first five-star ranking on the Campus Pride Index, a detailed survey of universities’ policies, services and institutional support for LGBT individuals.

More ideas, @Coloradomama ?

%COmom2boys. Hi! I am a Colorado mom of two sons as well. One went to Case and loved it ! He liked the music performance options and the summer research options and the mentoring he got in the physics department. He and his friends like Cleveland enough that some settled there. Its an up and coming city with more and more great small dance venues, good art and theatre, great bars and jobs. Easy access to Toronto if one wants a big city weekend as well. Cleveland airport had a lot of flights to anywhere as well.

@COMom2boys see above. I think my son appreciated living in a northeastern style city and the public transportation and the diversity of ideas and intellectualism of Cleveland as well. He will not come back to Colorado for a long while I bet but we’ll see. The intellectual atmosphere is compelling for some. He got a Cleveland Orchestra season pass all four years. He still visits his Case senior advisor regularly. Recently met him in Boston although he is now in grad school elsewhere. Ice cream is better in Cleveland than anywhere in Colorado. Dairy is bigger out there. Fall colors are better in Cleveland than Colorado. Cleveland has better restaurants than much of Colorado for visiting parents too. We also took advantage of Cleveland Playhouse Square to see live theatre.

We know a Case freshman who transferred to Northwestern U in Illinois. She was not happier after the transfer but I would say that Case Western is well known and you will get a fantastic education at Case. Professors care ! The PhD programs at Case are smaller than higher ranked colleges so undergrads get more attention at Case than bigger higher ranked public school In the Midwest.
Also if you look at the NSF charts of what schools send students onto PhD programs, CAse is historically quite high. Also the investments and improvements in Cleveland are phenomenal. See new dorms on 115th, new recreation center, new student center with a Zingermans coffee shop, new Maker Space with business help for start ups, new Maltz Performing Arts Center in a historic synogogue, new dental clinic in the brand new Health Sciences campus near the performing arts center and new park connecting that campus to the main campus.

Greek life is healthy at Case! Athletes fit in too. Hipsters are good ! Nerds find friends. Students from China and India find their way too.

Freshman housing is supportive too. Traditions are fun too. Weather is four seasons and the Cavs galvanize Cleveland if you stay for the summer !

@Coloradomama , maybe you mean the Indians? It’s doubtful the Cavs will be playing into the summer now that LeBron is gone.

Then there are the Browns in the fall, but rather difficult for students to get (reasonably priced) tickets.

@SkepticalOfMost Appears that sometimes you can get discounted tickets when the Weatherhead School of Mgt sponsors an outing (which they seem to be have been doing since 2012)
https://weatherhead.case.edu/events/2018/09/09/cleveland-browns-vs-pittsburgh-steelers

@bopper That’s cool! I wouldn’t imagine there were many available – Steelers tickets are always in demand even when the Browns aren’t doing well.

My CMU daughter never figured out a way to get cheap seats for the Steelers. Pirates, yes, and even the Pens had some college tickets but seem to have required getting in line early and waiting long.

Thanks, all. We have read all the literature (both many guidebooks/rankings as well as the promotional materials from CWRU) and have spoken with faculty, staff, and current students at Case. We’ve also been to Cleveland and Case many times. We simply wanted to hear first- or secondhand from current students (or recent grads) as to what had made Case special to them. Thank you for sharing your insights.

“Then there are the Browns in the fall, but rather difficult for students to get (reasonably priced) tickets.”

Really? I know they have been doing better - but when my daughter was a freshman (Winter 2017), CWRU was giving away tickets plus $50 food credits. My daughter and a bunch of friends - went to the stadium, used the food credits and left. (Not that she didn’t enjoy football - but I think that particular game, it was snowing.)

Sorry - and to add, now that the Cavs don’t have LeBron - CWRU has been offering tickets as well.
