@oplrus So many parents are here b/c tuition is off the charts - gone way up in recent years - and we have to know where we are sending tens-of-thousands dollars per year, and do a little research of our own. Back when tuition was a few thou per year parents were less involved, for sure.

@rk960925 Just wondering, did you apply for financial aid? Congrats btw

@Jimkingwood I think there’s more to it than that. Parents are just as caught up in the college admissions ride. It’s exciting for THEM and they feel the emotions the kids usually would feel. It’s odd

There’s an entire parents forum (and parent cafe) on CC. Some parents are more involved than others in kids’ college selection and application process, but some parents simply come here to hang out with other parents and discuss things that have nothing to do with college.

Some come to get help and advice on all the financial aid forms, and what schools might offer merit aid, and other cost-related issues. Some just come here for advice on dealing with and supporting our kids as THEY go through the process.

D was accepted to Case but she is working a double shift today and can’t see any scholarship/FA info on her phone. She did apply for financial aid. She loves Case, visited a couple of months ago, I didn’t go with her so if the cost is doable we will make a trip up together.

Well @oplrus there are a lot of reasons, but don’t discount the financial. We are ineligible for FA so if D get into an Ivy I am forking over about 300 grand cash. We- as a family - have to get a feel for it and decide if it is worth it.

Also, the better schools have FAR FAR more competitive admissions than they have ever had (in decades past) so kids are applying to more colleges and there are a lot of college visits, meaning tons of parental involvement running around the country.

When I was university-age 40 years ago, my peers and I just sent basically a one sheet app with name and address, the name and address of our high school so they could get a transcript, and college of preference (eng, biz, education, etc). Then the first time anyone actually laid eyes on the college was when we were dropped off at the dorm. That was the entirety of it. Most people only applied to one school. You knew if you were qualified for which schools.

Lastly, another BIG reason: high school is more competitive. With all the honors, ap courses, and extracurriculars, my D literally does’t have time to do all of the research she would like to do. It has been very much a cooperative effort, with her leading and making all apply decisions, dad doing the grunt work.

@mineO3O No I did not

Case has a “single door” policy…you apply to the University as a whole, not to a particular school or major. Once accepted you can major in anything you want. So, other than nursing or the PPSP programs and audition majors, which school or major you indicated has no bearing on the admission decision.

Also, many deferred students are accepted in the RD round so please, if you really are interested in attending, make this known- send an email of continued interest, update your semester grades, and make them aware of any new awards or major accomplishments. I’m not sure if they accept any additional info or recs, but do ask!

Strengths: ehhh
Weaknesses: recs, GPA, EC, and maybe SAT? (so everything…_
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Overall, I just had a pretty average application. Nothing really to distinguish me. Plus my math teachers rec letter didnt help, BUT to be honest, i thought i would get in. I sent them a BUNCH of emails on their school, so i thoughtt his showed interest, but i guess i was wrong.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Purdue Engineering Admit

General Comments: I think I might be heading to community college since my UC gpa was low, and CWRU and UC’s were really my only options. Well, i guess i wasted the last 4 years of my life, but on the bright side, i learned hard work doesnt pay off sometimes. i have ADD, so i had to work hard to get those grades.

Decision: DEFERRED

Applied to which school/college: This is where it might have gone wrong. For my first choice major I put down “Pre-med” even though it isn’t really a major, and I know that. My second choice major was biology.

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2310 (single sitting, but took the SAT 3 times)
ACT: n/a
SAT II: 800 math 2, 740 chem, 800 bio molecular, 800 Chinese with listening

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): some departmental awards but that’s it.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): kind of lazy to list, but the usual: President of two clubs, research at local top university, some public speaking related activities, some medically related ec.
Job/Work Experience:
Volunteer/Community service: hospital, library special program, Ronald McDonald House, Chinese school TA, 300+ hours.
Summer Activities: research, 2x internships
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 7-8?
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Bio teacher, hard to tell
Teacher Rec #2: English teacher, should be good
Counselor Rec: No idea, but she liked me
Additional Rec: Internship mentor, sounds good to me.
Interview: Went well to me lol

Other

State (if domestic applicant): CA

Reflection

Weaknesses: “lack of interest”? applied on Nov. 2nd
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: WOULD LIKE TO KNOW AS WELL LOL
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Deferred ED: Brown.

General Comments: Still waiting for a college to go to haha.

OPEN FOR COMMENTS/SPECULATIONS/JOKES

@keepcalmcarryonn dont want to disappoint you, but i dont think you can get rejected with EA. i think you can only get deferred. Atleast, idk anyone who got rejected with EA/ED

@toesockshoe No that’s fine! I get confused as to which schools have which policy regarding EA/ED decisions, thanks for letting me know :)

@keepcalmcarryonn No problem! and if it makes u feel any better, i got deferred too and wanted to go to Case. lol

@AcceptMeOrNot its ok, join the crew. I got a 2130, 3.75 UW gpa, have ADD, and i think i might be heading over to CC.

and yeah, idk how u got deferred with a 2310, but i see some people getting in with 1800’s.

@AcceptMeOrNot @toesockshoe read posts #266 and #267

Accepted!!! If I request the shirt does that mean I’m telling them I’m going to Case? Is it okay to request a shirt before I have decided?

@Sdgal2 Thanks!

Decision: Accepted with $23k merit aid

Teacher rec #2: math HL teacher, 8?
Counselor rec: 7, decent rec. Has too many kids to remember who they are

Reflection

Strengths: GPA, SATs, ECs show passion for civic engagement, hooks, underrep. state, unique life story, IB maybe
Weaknesses: ESSAY!!! It was definitely the worst thing I’ve ever written.
Why were you accepted/rejected/deferred: see strengths
Where else were you accepted: first acceptance
General comments: the $23k scholarship means that I would still have to pay $37k per year, which is my parents’ entire income :)) not going to happen. I’m going to try the need-based schools (Ivies) RD, and if I don’t get in I’ll talk to the Case FA people. I can be VERY persuasive

Hello!
I got accepted into Case Western university, and I will post my stats later
I was just wondering how you know which college/major you got into because my acceptance letter says nothing about it
thank you!
