HI, I am racking my brains out trying to figure out which school to choose to go to next fall.
I'm interested in majoring in BME as a premed with a possible minor in Psychology and Spanish. Both schools gave me the same amount of money - Rochester gave me the Rush Rhees Scholarship (half tuition), and I was also a Renaissance Scholar finalist (full tuition); Case gave me a slightly better financial aid grant that's a little over half the tuition, BUT has to be renewed every year. Please, please, please help me. I'm having a very hard time trying to choose between the two!!

by the way, this is tulsadad’s daughter

For BME-- Case is definitely better than Rochester!

For bme i’d definetely go with case. It has the 11th ranked bme program in the country and there are tons of research opportunities with the hospitals in close proximity and the newly opened cancer center. I just recently visited case and there are multiple places within walking distance of campus to go to.

Im very familiar with rochester since I lived there for the first eighteen years of my life. It is a great school but I just don’t think there is as great of an emphasis placed on bme as you would find at case. I also think it would be a little but harder to find opportunities for research and internships in rochester.

go to u of r. it is ranked overall better for undergrad and case and u of r are about the same for bme. plus you dont want to have to renew your financial aid every year

Having visited both last year for DS, who is also BME, my impression was that UR has more of a classic college atmosphere while Case is more of a Technical/Research atmosphere. DS went with Case because he felt it was the best fit. I strongly encourage you to visit both schools, as we did (they’re not that far apart).

I’ve never visited URochester so I can’t say much about the school.

But purely on an academic basis, Case’s BME program and engineering program as a whole is far better than Rochester. We definitely have a bigger and more reputable engineering school than them.

I chose Case.
I can’t speak for Rochester, so I will not.
But Case is making huge improvement of course in its specialized fields (Med, Bio, Biomed, Biochem) but also in its popularity and prestige.
Admission rates went from 70% to 48%~
Anyways, I’m pursuing pre-med as well and besides their great departments in the field, the surrounding environment was awesome.
The campus area is literally saturated with University Hospitals…Cleveland clinic Cancer center… etc etc. The hospitals also prefer Case Western students well above other students that apply Internships, Volunteering, and Shadowing opportunities.
So I think you’ll get a Very good feel and experience for the whole ‘doctor’ thing before you try to apply for med school. :p
