Essays (rating 1-10, details): only the CommonApp essay - 7/10? Answered first prompt (background,
identity, interest, or talent prompt), wrote about JROTC; how I came to join it, its impact on me,
and why I donā€™t want to continue with it or have any sort of career in the military. I donā€™t know, I
didnā€™t feel like it was exceptionally strong or anything, and it was the second topic I attempted to
write my essay on. I got a P.S. about it though  - ā€œP.S. Thank you for sharing your experiences
with JROTC. I enjoyed reading your reflections.ā€

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 8/10 English teacher, had me for AP Literature junior year. I was one of 2-3 kids
she had last year that got 5s. Knows me pretty well and probably a good writer. Likes me a lot,
although we might have butted heads a little bit in class. She liked that I contributed to the
discussion and stuff I think but obviously I couldnā€™t read it so I donā€™t know how good it is.

Teacher Rec #2: 9/10 AP Chem teacher junior year (my intended major is Chem). Loves me but
doesn't know me reaaallly well on a personal level. I've heard that he uses my work as answer
keys in class and he's said that he's had one other student of my caliber, and that student went
to MIT (I got deferred though lololololol). Also loves me for the ACS Olympiad stuff we did last
year. Plus overall he's a teddy bear to everyone, but again I don't actually know what he put.

Counselor Rec: 6-7/10? I don't know my counselor very well, but she seems to really like me. On
the one hand, she's realllly old and kinda crazy, but on the other hand she's been doing this
college stuff for so long that she seems to know her stuff. She interviewed me for an hour or so
to help her write the recommendation.

 Additional Rec: none

Interview: I interviewed with admissions staff on campus when I visited last July. I thought it went
well- nice conversation (although I may have talked too much) and I felt pretty at ease. Downsides
were I didnā€™t realize it was THE INTERVIEW and my dad was pretty embarrassing.

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Chemistry
State (if domestic applicant): WV
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public, best public high school in state, but thatā€™s not saying much since itā€™s WV
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: pretty up there? We donā€™t live in a gated community or anything but itā€™s high
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none. WV and female in STEM might be bonuses though.

Reflection:
Strengths: GPA, test scores, leadership/community service/ECs?, demonstrated interest (on campus
tour, interview, on email list?)
Weaknesses: no big draws, no big awards, non-stellar essay, ECs, and recsā€¦basically everything
else?
Why you think you were accepted: above strengths
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: so far Accepted WVU Honors, Ohio State,
deferred UChicago and MIT

[size=4]General Comments:[size] I think it is a very good school, but I think I will have issue paying for the high room and board costs. I know I can offset this with scholarships, but their FA site says they can take from your tuition money if you receive outside scholarships and then Iā€™d be back where I startedā€¦
The common app was very simple to use and I had a counselor help me. I will try to get in touch with a FA officer at Case because taking away merit money I earned sounds annoying.

^ With family income of less than 20K, perhaps they might come through with some need-based aid to help pay for room and board. Did you fill out the FAFSA/CSS Profile?

Yeah I did fill out the financial aid stuff. I got the pell grant and a couple other grants and after those it will be about $8,000. The room and board+books and supplies and personal expenses add up to about 17k. But I seen on their website they can take away money from your tuition if it exceeds the amount needed?

Got this off their student guide to financial aid

ā€œ3. If a student receives a scholarship or
benefit from the university or other
source which is specifically for tuition, the
university scholarship or benefit may be
reduced so that the scholarship and the
benefit do not exceed tuition. Scholarships
offered outside the university replace
loan or employment in the financial aid
package. The combination of all sources of
assistance cannot exceed the total cost of
attendance.ā€

Search for "student guide to financial aid Case Western " on Google and the PDF with this info will come up.
So can I not use scholarship sites like fast web or Cleveland Foundation to help pay for room and board and stuff?

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Piano for 13-ish years with yearly examinations and/or scholarship from local club, Model UN, Marching band in HS, equestrian that competes in IEA
Job/Work Experience: Work at barn, but wasnā€™t on my application
Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer at barn for a few years
Summer Activities: Um equestrian? also marching band starts in the second half of summer
Essays (rating 1-10, details): it could range anywhere from a 5-8, I honestly donā€™t knowā€¦ TBH I had an essay that I realized was crap a couple weeks before deadlines came around and wrote a completely different essay with zero teacher or peer review. It was about what could/should happen to racehorses after their careers are over.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): probably nothing spectacular, maybe 8 at best 6 at worst
Teacher Rec #1: Stats teacher that (I think) liked me, as I was the only junior in my class that was all other seniors and actually tried, unlike the seniors. I did pretty well in the class, but the teacher was dealing with serious issues in his personal life around the time he wrote my essay so Iā€™m unsure of the quality.
Teacher Rec #2: English teacher that I wasnā€™t planning on getting a rec from, but asked bc the above teacher wasnā€™t sure if heā€™d be able to write me one. I hardly participated vocally in the class, maybe spoke voluntarily three times? I was paying attention, but am a shy person to begin with and that class wasnā€™t really up my alley, although I still did well.
Counselor Rec: No clue, only met with the counselor once or twice and she was new so didnā€™t know me very well.
Additional Rec: Band director who has taught me since fifth grade, and although I donā€™t take private lessons Iā€™m fairly musically talented because of my background in piano. In marching band I often stay behind to put uniforms away, organize music, etc. I have a very good relationship with him.
