They gave me nothing. It is projected to cost $58,000 per year. They said that the estimated "parental contribution" is "$99,999".
I emailed them - they said that I don't qualify for need-based financial aid.
I called them - they said I don't qualify for need-based financial aid. I asked about merit aid, they said I didn't get any scholarships either.
I emailed them again - they said that there wasn't any issue that needed any adjusting need-based/merit aid-wise.

I have a cumulative GPA of 4.15ish weighted. I had a 3.99ish weighted before 12th grade. I had a 4.71 weighted in 12th grade. My class rank jumped 22 spots after first semester and it's likely even higher now.
My SAT is 2120 (660r, 720m, 740w). I have a 730 on the Math I SAT subject test.

I have leadership positions (presidency/captaincy) in eight clubs/teams.

I was under the impression that Case was generous and gave out an average or 24K-28K in aid? And I heard that if you keep asking they give in. But that's not the case as of now. What should I do? What can I do? How do I negotiate and get money? Is there anywhere online I can get $ through scholarships?

My other option is attending Virginia Tech University Honors which I'll probably have to do now. But I wanted to go to Case for biology or biomedical engineering.

I am sure that they have a formula on which they base what kind of aid (merit or otherwise) they give. They also have targets for their various majors and perhaps they had an overabundance of applicants for the majors you are interested in. From your post it sounds like they are not particularly interested in making concessions.

My suggestion is to start focusing on VT or, if you really want a private tech school, look at the [Association of Independent Technological Universities: AITU](http://theaitu.org) schools which hare rolling admissions to see if they are possibilities and might provide some merit aid.

I’m sorry that things did not work out for you with Case. Yes, Case is considered generous, on average, as compared to other school, for many students. But not for all students, Did you qualify for financial aid at any other schools? That is formula based, and your family income largely determines that. Not a whole lot of discussion, if you come out way over the need line.

As for their merit awards, I don’t remember whether they used to be guaranteed at certain threshholds, but they may not be now. I know some schools that used to guaranteed scholarships that now just use those threshholds for making a student eligible for them, and only some school get the awards now, and many are getting awards greatly reduced from what I remember in earlier years. I found out that there are statistically fewer given out now too.

Regardless of what the issue was, it appears that you have done due diligence in having your numbers double checked. If paying full freight is not doable or desirable, you have an excellent choice there in VT.

Obviously your parents make quite a bit of money if your EFC is $100K. And I’m afraid your stats are about in the middle 50% of Case’s applicants so they feel merit aid is not warranted. If your parents are not willing to pay for case (though their income indicates they should be able to afford it) then you’ll need to look at different schools. It seems like you aren’t happy with VT. Are there any other schools which accepted you?

Thanks for all your responses. I do appreciate it.

@cptofthehouse - Thanks for your response. Yea I’m considering just going with Tech.

@Erin’s dad - I’m actually somewhat confused about it. I think my parent’s combined is approximately 300k. A large chunk of that goes to taxes. But still their EFC is 100k? Is that normal or do you think there might be an error?

Would investing 58k in Case be worth if I want to become a doctor (or at least have that option open via biomedical engineering major)? I would try to keep high GPA so that I could early scholarship for future semesters. Or would my best option be VT? It’s just that nowadays not many people are getting in med school and Case seems to be full of medical volunteering opportunities and VT doesn’t seem that abundant in that particular area.

I know it’s difficult to understand, because you only know what you know. But the truth is, $300,000 a year is a LOT of money. Your EFC is based on income & assets, and at that income level your parents most likely have saved (which is a good thing), and their EFC is going to be very high. There is a certain EFC level at which the number is high enough that instead of giving you a number, you get a 99999 … which basically means, your EFC is higher than the cost of attendance at any U.S. school, so we’ll just call it 99999. At $125,000 annual income, EFC is roughly $33,000 … so at $300,000 annual income, it’s going to be more than twice that & more than pretty much any school’s EFC (and certainly in a zone where need based aid would not be given). That doesn’t mean your parents can or will spend full freight for an expensive school, and that is their choice. You have an excellent option in VT, which is definitely in your favor. You will be fine at VT!

You’re parents are very affluent which is why you didn’t qualify for any aid.

When you look at what the “average” student gets in aid think about that for a minute. The average student doesn’t have parents who earn $300k per year. Don’t you think there’s a point where a school says, “hey, his parents can pay”?

My SAT is 2120 (660r, 720m, 740w

the reason that you didn’t get merit based aid is that merit is usually based on the M + CR score. Yours is 1380. that’s probably not high for the school.

If you want to be a doctor, don’t go to Case. That would be a waste of money. Go to a school where your stats are high for the school so you’ll have a better chance at getting a high GPA, especially in the weeder courses.

So you need to be in the top 18% of the CWRU applicant pool to expect a merit award, and even higher to expect a substantial award. That would indicate ACT>33, SAT>1460 to have a shot at merit aid.
