Case Western Reserve University...!

i've been scrutinizing CWRU recently..

my gpa is 4.45(w) and 3.72 (uw) at a decent public high school in pennsylvania.
my old sat is 540(v) and 780 (m)
new sat is 580(c), 730 (m) and 570 (w).
(i wasn't born in us, but i lived in us for 8 yrs)
780 on math2c and 740 on chemistry.
3 on APUSH, 2on APCS, and 5 on AP chem.
a lot of clubs and a lot of comm. service.
also pennsylvania gov school for information technology.

(it would be nice if a current student at cwru or a person who knows alot about cwru answered some of my questions...
i've been doing alot of research and there are alot of opposing views on cwru...
so please help me!!!)

-is it safe for me to say that cwru is my match?

-i know that their scholarship is based on SAT scores.
how much do you think i can get with my SAT?? (i'm retaking in oct. and hoping for 1400+ critical and math combined.. i hope that the writing doesn't affect the scholarship)

-i found that alot of ppl complain about the neighborhood. how bad is it?? do people get killed often?? suicides??

-i read that students have access to the train (RTA) and can go to downtown cleveland. do students visit downtown often?? are there alot of entertainment in downtown??

-i also read that the food is bad... how bad is it? how good is the italian pizza place?

-how is cwru's chemE??

-how is cwru's management?? (i read that cwru's management is actually ranked higher than cwru's engineering)

i know that some of my questions are really really weird...
but if you have knowledge about cwru, please answer my questions and give me any informations that might help a prospective student.
cwru seems like a good school, but alot of ppl said they don't want to return to cwru...

I suggest that you post this under Case under the Alphabetic List of Colleges. I am sure you will get more responses there....

Yeah, Case can be considered a match, but don't get too comfy with it there.

Couldn't they have picked a more attractive name, i mean Case Western Reserve doesn't sound like a college to me at all.

CWR is very generous with merit-aid pacakges, I suppose its to entice people to come to Cleveland.

You can't be too picky about the name of the school...unless of course you can pick the names of rich people that are going to die and leave their money to create schools.

Case Western Reserve University is the result of a merger of the Western Reserve school of arts and sciences (Western Reserve refers to an area of land set aside at the time of the Revolutionary War) and Case School of Applied Sciences (Created from a trust from some rich guy named Leanord Case). They decided to combine to get more well-rounded students and to be able to handle increasing numbers of students in 1967. Neither school wanted to give up their legacy of education, so Case Western Reserve University was a compromise.

Who cares about the name of the school if it gives a quality education? Personally I think that schools like University of Miami (in Ohio of all places) are more poorly named than Case.

Admission = yes

Scholarship = not much at present

Case doesn't accept the old SAT, so using the new score with the old scale: scholarship as of now would probably only be about 1/4.

Case isn't in the best neighborhood, but Cleveland itself doesn't have that many violent crimes compared to other major cities.

If you're into alt./indie music, a venue called the Grog Shop is about five minutes away and there are other venues close by. Public transit through buses can get you to downtown in 5-10 minutes. In terms of fine arts, you'll find Cleveland lacking.

Don't know about the food.

And all I know is biomed. eng. at Case is one of the best in the country. Not sure about ChemE though.

It has been many years since I lived in the CWRU area, but I did visit again a few months ago. Even in the ugly old days, it was a reasonably safe area. Now it appears to be much much better. I can say the same for all of Cleveland - much better than it was.
Mamma Santa's pizza--yum yum.
Suicides - probably still bad. The Cleveland climate absolutely sucks especially during the school year. Cleveland suffers from the "lake effect". Sunny days between October and May are rare. The constant clouds and general ugliness are depressing.

Ctheflute: Miami University is named after the native Americans who were first in the area; for years, their teams were called the Redskins until that was changed in response to sensitivity (or PC-ness, depending on your perspective) to the implied slur. For more trivia: http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/ohc/h/gro/mt.shtml

Doesn't Case accept around 75% of the applicants?

Case, for the class of 2006, will still take scores from the old SAT. It'll "mix n' match" the old and new scores.

Ctheflute,
It's no big deal, and i don't judge a school by its name, but thanks for the history lesson on Case.

You can buy a T-shirt in Oxford, OH that says: Miami was a University while Florida still belonged to Spain.

Miami University was founded in 1809. :)

Here are some answers for you. This is from a relative who went
there years ago, so thinga may have changed.

To net this out, I'd go to Case only if you're going to do Biotech,
medicine (grad school), or accounting (biz school) AND they
give you a good scholaship.

-is it safe for me to say that cwru is my match?
A. Sure. I think you're in. I'd hide the low AP test scores.

-i found that alot of ppl complain about the neighborhood. how bad is it?? do people get killed often?? suicides??
A. Case is a small school (less than 5,000 students) caught between
a Black ghetto (E105, Cleveland Clinic area) and an Italian ghetto on
the northwestern side where most of the off campus living is.
You'll be safe on that side if you're a white male (or female, perhaps).
Just be careful, go in groups and always be watchful and smart,
to minimize your chances of getting mugged.

-i read that students have access to the train (RTA) and can go to downtown cleveland. do students visit downtown often?? are there alot of entertainment in downtown??
A. True, if you want to go downtown for a job or internship. You should
factor in trekking through snow and waiting around in freezing train stations
for about 4-5 months of the year. The entertainment (clubs) are in the
flats on the river. Your best bet is to go with afriend who has a car.
If you're into theatre or sports, you'll have a tough time trying to
take the RTA. You'll be better off taking in the excellent Cleveland
Orchestra at the Severence hall which is on the Case campus.
They also show good movies on campus. You can also visit the
rock.n roll museum at leaset once.

-i also read that the food is bad... how bad is it? how good is the italian pizza place?
A. Food is good, esp in the little Italy area (it's not really a ghetto,
it's off limits for black or colored people who get beaten up there)
and the coventry area further northwest of the campus.

-how is cwru's chemE??
A. I heard Biotech is top 5. Engineering (EE, CS, CHem) is good,
esp because the profs teach. You should look up the profs cv.

-how is cwru's management?? (i read that cwru's management is actually ranked higher than cwru's engineering)
A. Weatherhead has improved over the years. The strong areas are
accounting, operations management, and information systems.

CWRU came about from a merger of Case Institute of Technology
and Western Reserve College. Case has been popular for its
engineering (good profs teach) for a liong time.
